ITV Racing Tips for 2000 Guineas Day at Newmarket

2:15 Newmarket

The opener on 2000 Guineas Day comes up at 2:15 and it is known as the Kilvington Stakes, a listed race for the fillies and mares over 6f.

The one I like here is PERDIKA (11/2). She comes here with no fitness concerns as she has been on the go all year. She ran in a listed race at Bath last time going down by a head to a solid yardstick in Happy Romance. I think that was a strong listed race and she at least proved she’s up to this level. She likes to sit handy which is encouraging and any rainfall won’t be a problem. William Buick rides this track as well as anyone and he has to be considered a really strong jockey booking here.

 

2:50 Newmarket

The first of two tricky handicaps at HQ comes up at 2:50 and first up is the Howden Handicap over 6f.

I like CHAIRMANOFTHEBOARD (16/1) EW here. Trainer Jack Channon has started his training career strongly and he has a 29% strike rate over the last two weeks. The selection has a good draw in stall 5 as this track often favours the far side of the track early on the season. He ran well when finishing third here last month and hopefully the first-time cheekpieces can squeeze out a little more improvement. The strong pace and soft ground will suit as he’s won under similar conditions in the past.

3:05 Goodwood

The one race from Goodwood on ITV comes up at 3:05 and it’s a tricky 1m2f handicap.

I like FARASI LANE (7/1) here for the Hollie Doyle and Tom Ward combination. A good winner at Southwell two starts back, he was really unlucky last time out at Lingfield. Held up off the pace, he was coming to make his challenge before being badly hampered costing him all chance. He was only beaten just over 2l that day and running off the same mark here, I think he has to go close.

 

3:25 Newmarket

The second handicap at Newmarket is the Howden Suffolk Stakes over 1m1f.

Again I like the Jack Channon horse in here, MAJESTIC (8/1) EW. A winner here off a mark of 86 on his final start last season, he returned to action in the Lincoln Handicap and ran a cracker to finish 4th. There’s no reason why he can’t kick on again off the same mark. George Bass takes off 3lb again and I’d expect a bold bid with that seasonal reappearance behind him.

 

3:40 Thirsk

We head to Thirsk for one race and it’s the competitive Thirsk Hunt Cup handicap over the mile.

I like SYMBOLIZE (15/2) EW here. He made a promising seasonal reappearance finishing 4th here at Thirsk last month for new trainer Julie Camacho. He wasn’t beaten all that far and he’s entitled to come on for that effort. The early market vibes are encouraging and he is definitely well handicapped if he can return to form. He has been operating in high level handicaps over the past few seasons but things haven’t gone to plan. If on a going day, a mark of 97 is well within his reach.

4:00 Newmarket

It’s Group 3 action next with the Palace House Stakes over the minimum 5f trip.

It’s TWILIGHT CALLS (10/3) NAP for me here. He has always looked a horse full of talent and he shown that when finishing a fine second behind superstar sprinter Nature Strip at Group 1 level at Royal Ascot when last seen. He has a fantastic record when fresh winning on his reappearance in both 2021 and 2022. Ryan Moore is booked and the Henry Candy team are in rude form.

 

4:40 Newmarket

The feature race ends proceedings and it is of course the Group 1 Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes over the famous Rowley mile.

The one for me is CHALDEAN (8/1). His 2 year-old form is really strong and he always gave the impression he’d be a better miler. He won the Dewhurst here over 7f last season which is always a good pointer for this. He has the beaten of the English horses on all known form. Little Big Beat has stamina concerns especially with the rain in the air and the price has definitely gone on Augusta Rodin. Thing’s obviously didn’t go to plan on his return in the Greenham but I still think that will have knocked the freshness out of him. On all known form and with this extra furlong likely to bring out further improvement, he’s the value in here.
