ITV Racing Tips for a Lucky 15 on Day 1 of Glorious Goodwood

2:50 Goodwood
The first race on ITV on Glorious Goodwood week is the Chesterfield Cup, a class 2 handicap for the elders over 1m2f.
The one I like here is MOKTASAAB (10/1) EW. A previous course and distance winner here at Goodwood is always a good place to start and Moktasaab won here off a mark of 92 last season. He went close in this race finishing a good third off 95 on his only other start here which is encouraging. He returns for this race again this season and runs off a 5lb lower mark. The visor is removed and he sneaks in at the bottom of the weights. The ground should be no problem and Hayley Turner will drop him in. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t hit the frame at least.
3:25 Goodwood
Next up at 3:25 is the Vintage Stakes, a Group 2 contest for the 2 year-olds over 7f.
It’s GOLDEN MIND (10/3) NAP for me here. He’s improving with every run, he was very green on debut at Hamilton wandering about and stayed on for third. There was clear signs of ability and he duly obliged at Leicester over 6f on his second start despite still looking very raw. Last time out he ran a belter finishing third in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. He stayed on well there and shown clear signs of promise. That race is working out well too. Dettori is an encouraging jockey booking for this and I think he’ll continue on an upward curve and take this.
4:00 Goodwood
The 4:00 race is the Lennox Stakes, a Group 2 again over 7f for the 3 year-olds and above.
There looks to be plenty of pace on here and I’ll chance MARBAAN (11/1) EW as he will sit off that pace and Jamie Spencer is the right man for that job. He was a good course and distance winner here in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes (previous race) so it has to be a positive returning to this track. Only 3, he gets plenty of weight off a lot of his rivals and he’s worth chancing at the prices.
4:35 Goodwood
The feature on Day 1 comes up at 4:35 and it’s a decent renewal of the Goodwood Cup, a Group 1 race over 2 miles.
It’s COURAGE MON AMI (5/2) NB for me in this. A winner of the Ascot Gold Cup on just his fourth career start, he’s obviously a horse full of serious ability. That was an impressive victory and he was the only horse to come from off the pace in that contest. I can picture a similar scenario with Coltrane having a target on his back again here and the selection can pick him off again. The 2m is no concern to me as he shown a decent turn of foot to win last time out. The ground won’t be a problem being out of Frankel. He’s comfortably the least unexposed horse in the line-up and the stable have a fantastic record in the race.
