ITV Racing Tips for Day 1 of the Newmarket July Festival (Thursday 7th July)
Newmarket’s July meeting gets underway on Thursday 7yh July and ITV Racing are covering four of the races, starting with the 1.50pm, and Henry has picked his betting tips from all the live races.
Carlisle is also covered for one of the races, meaning a total of 5 live races on Thursday and there is a brand new sign-up offer to get yourself a free £10 bet at Zetbet.
1:50 Newmarket
First up from HQ is the Bahrain Trophy Stakes, a Group 3 race over 1m5f.
The one for me is MASEKELA (15/8) NB. The selection has took a step forward from his 2 year-old campaign finishing second on seasonal debut before running a cracker in the Derby to finish 4th. That’s the best piece of form on offer and I think he’ll be well suited by this extra furlong today as he does took a little while to get going. He’s the solid one in here as chief market rival Walk Of Stars finished last in the Derby and was very green the start before that. Masekela looks professional and hopefully that gets him over the line first here.
2:25 Newmarket
The 2:25 is the July Stakes, a Group 2 race for 2 year-old colts and geldings.
The best race of the day with the Royal Ascot 2 year-old form clashing here. The one for me is LITTLEBIG BEAR (13/8) here. Backed like defeat was out of the question at Ascot, he found plenty for pressure to get up close to home. He’ll have learnt plenty from that and trainer Aiden O’Brien brings his 2 year-olds throughout the season so I’m sure he’ll continue to improve. The second Rocket Rodney has franked that form with a victory last Friday at Sandown.
2:45 Carlisle
We have one race from Carlisle on ITV at 2:45 and it is a 5f handicap with 13 runners scheduled to go to post.
It’s hard to get away from RAZEYNA (4/1) here. Definitely the least exposed in this race, it’s interesting William Haggas brings her to Carlisle for her handicap debut. A decent winner on debut at Newbury, she then finished third twice to get her this handicap mark of 82. She has potential to be a lot better than that and I think she’ll prove difficult to beat here.
3:00 Newmarket
The 3:09 from Newmarket is a wide-open handicap to get stuck into over 6f.
The one I’ve landed on here is BOSH (11/1) EW. A consistent 3 year-old who has ran well on both starts this season. Last time out, at Goodwood he was slowly away and stayed on well to finish a never nearer 4th. I get the impression this drop back to 6f from 7f with the stiff final furlong the July Course has to offer will suit the selection well. Drawn in stall 17 looks promising as the track often favours the higher numbers in these handicaps, especially these from off the pace given the stiff finish. I think he can go close at a nice price under ideal race conditions.
3:35 Newmarket
The final race on ITV is the Princess Of Wales Close Brothers Stakes, a Group 2 over the 1m4f trip.
Yibir has been disappointing since his seasonal return and I’m happy to take him on here. The one for me is MOSTAHDAF (11/8) NAP. He hasn’t done much wrong this season. A good winner on his return, he’s then finished second twice in decent races which includes the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes last time out at Royal Ascot. This Group 2 doesn’t look as strong as that race and he’s a horse I think we still haven’t quite seen the best of. He can resume winning ways today.
