ITV Racing Tips for Friday 27th December at Chepstow and Kempton
1:05 Chepstow
The first race from Chepstow on Welsh National day is a handicap chase ran over just shy of 2m4f.
I like LOWRY’S BAR (3/1) in this. He’s shown a decent level of form already this season and with three runs under his belt, he has plenty of experience on his side. He’s improved for each outing this season and he was a decent winner last time out at Exeter keeping on well to get up close to home. A 4lb rise for that win looks fair with further improvement likely. He looks to hold a solid chance in the opener.
1:20 Kempton
The first race from Kempton is a trappy mares handicap hurdle over the extended 3 miles.
It is LARCHMONT LASS (9/2) for me. A winner on reappearance at Wincanton off 111, that was a decent race and it’s a race that may be worth following. She went to Sandown next time off just 4lb higher but the ground was heavy there and she just didn’t enjoy it. Back on a quicker surface here, she can resume her improvement and land another victory.
1:40 Chepstow
The 1:40 from Chepstow is a Grade 2 juvenile hurdle for the 3 year-olds over 2m.
It is OPEC (9/2) for me here. A faller on hurdles debut, he has put that effort well behind with three decent victories since. He is a straightforward sort that likes to go from the front and jumps well enough to put inexperienced rivals in trouble. He was an impressive winner at Newbury last time out where he made all. He pulled clear again when challenged and bolted up in the end by 8 lengths. He’s improving and his trainer James Owen is very good with his juveniles. He sets a decent standard and will prove a tough nut to pass on a track that often suits the prominent racers.
1:55 Kempton
Next up at Kempton is the Grade 2 Wayward Lad Novices Chase over 2m.
I like SIR GINO (5/4) NB in this over the trip. He showed his class when winning the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle on his return travelling strongly and powering clear on the run in. He even jumped like a chaser to me that day and connections are adamant he’s going to improve further for a fence. His chief danger Ballyburn is bred for further and I just feel he may lack the speed of Sir Gino around this tight 2 mile track. Sir Gino can prove his class and go to the top of the Arkle betting.
2:10 Chepstow
The 2:10 is a trappy handicap hurdle ran over just shy of the 3 mile trip.
I think WOODIE FLASH (10/3) NAP can make up for an unlucky second last time out at Newbury here. He was a decent winner prior to the Newbury run at Ffos Las and the market move for him at Newbury suggests connections are confident his mark is still on the lenient side. He just got going too late in a slowly run race at Newbury last time out staying on strongly to finish a never nearer second. He is 5lb higher but I think this is a weaker race and hopefully he gets a better gallop to aim at this time. A mark of 129 definitely looks workable.
2:30 Kempton
The 2:30 is the Desert Orchid Handicap Chase over 2 miles.
I fancy EDWARDSTONE (4/1) to defy top weight here. The 10 year-old showed he still r trains a decent level of ability when finishing third at Cheltenham on his seasonal return not beaten far by Jonbon. He then went to the Grade 1 Tingle Creek earlier this month and was still travelling strongly before coming down 4 out. This is a significant drop in class and although he carries top weight, I think he’s up to it with conditions to suit.
2:50 Chepstow
The Welsh Grand National comes up at 2:50, always competitive over the extended 3m6f trip.
I think IWILLDOIT (14/1) EW can run another big race here in the Welsh National for Sam Thomas. Thomas is a very good target trainer and can certainly get his horses ready first time out. Therefore, the break since February is no concern. A previous winner of the race in 2021, he’s effectively off the same mark with Callum Prichards 7lb claim taken into consideration. The combination has already landed a big race this season when Al Dancer made all in the Badger Beer Chase at Wincanton. A proven stayer who will relish this test yet again. He looks sure to run a big one and I’d be disappointed if he didn’t hit the frame at least.
3:08 Kempton
The final race on ITV is a 3m handicap chase.
The one I like is DREAMING BLUE (4/1). I was impressed with his victory last time at Ludlow where he made all and showed a willing attitude to fend off the challengers. The 7 year-old is arguably open to more improvement still and a 3lb rise for that victory last time out seems lenient to me.
