ITV Racing Tips for New Year’s Eve 2022 – Newbury, Warwick and Lingfield
The end of 2022 gives us one more Saturday ITV racing preview and this weekend’s action comes from Newbury, Warwick and Lingfield ahead of the Cheltenham New Year’s Day card on Sunday.
The action gets underway with the 1.15pm race from Newbury and there are eight live races including the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle from Newbury at 3.00pm.

1:15 Newbury
The 1:15 from Newbury is a handicap chase over the extended 2 miles.
I like GALLIC GEORDIE (5/1) here for the Drinkwater stable. The stable are in decent form of late and this horse may well have won last time out if he didn’t come to grief two out at Lingfield. The rain forecast will be in his favour and Robbie Dunne is an encouraging jockey booking in my opinion. Compensation awaits.
1:35 Warwick
The first of two races from Warwick on ITV is a handicap hurdle for the stayers over 3m2f.
The one I’ve landed on is ONE FER MAMMA (11/2) EW here. A really consistent sort who always seems to run his race. He made an encouraging seasonal return last time out at Haydock finishing a good third and I’d be hopeful that would have put him spot on for this. He likes to sit handy which is often important here at Warwick and he’s a solid each-way selection from near the bottom of the weights.
1:50 Newbury
The next race is a handicap hurdle over the intermediate 2m4f trip.
I can’t get away from PIKAR (5/2) NAP here for the Skelton team. He’s always been held in decent regard by the stable and he ran at a decent level running in races behind the likes of Jonbon. He was an impressive winner on his seasonal return this season beating a solid yardstick in Mullnback comfortably. I think he still have scope to improve further off a mark of 130. The strong travelling sort will be suited by this track and the likely strong pace.
2:10 Warwick
The 2:10 from Warwick is the turn of the Veterans. A handicap chase over 3m for the old generation.
The one I’ve landed on here is MIDNIGHT MOSS (15/4). I was encouraged by his run earlier this month at Doncaster where he finished a decent second behind Rocky’s Treasure. That was his first run for a while and he was entitled to come on for it. He gets weight off both his market rivals today and I think he’s the most solid selection in the line-up.
2:25 Newbury
The 2:25 contest is another competitive handicap chase, this time for the stayers over 3m2f.
I like GRUMPY CHARLEY (12/1) EW here. The Chris Honour team are a shrewd operation and they nearly landed a decent handicap at Kempton on the 27th December with Tile Tapper finishing second. That was the only runner the stable had over the festive period so you’d be hopeful the stable is in decent enough form based on that effort. The selection is a little hit and miss but he did win here at Newbury around this time last year off a higher mark. He’ll relish any soft in the going description and Bryan Carver is an underrated jockey on board.
2:40 Lingfield
We have one race from the AW Lingfield track and it is a fillies handicap over the mile.
I’ll go with MORGAN FAIRY (10/3) here for the top combination of William Haggas and Tom Marquand. She has to give weight away to her rivals here but she has the class edge having landed a Group 2 earlier in the year. It’s hard to trust her rivals and she brings solid form to the table. We’ve seen on plenty of occasions on both the flat and the jumps recently that the classier horses are more than capable of defying a big weight to land a handicap.
3:00 Newbury
The feature comes up at 3:00 and it is a decent renewal of the Grade 1 Challow Novices Hurdle over 2m4f.
I like HERMES ALLEN (6/5) NB here. I was really impressed with his victory at Cheltenham last time out where he powered clear to win by 9l. The form isn’t up to much but his master trainer Paul Nicholls has a fantastic record in this race. We’ve seen as recently as Boxing Day, when he targets a race, he’s tough to stop.
He isn’t the most appealing price so I’ll throw an each-way selection in with CRAMBO EW. Unbeaten in three starts, he’ll relish any rain that falls and I don’t think we’ve got to the bottom of him yet. Fergal O’Brien thinks a lot of him and it’s easy to see why. I think he’ll be staying on when others are falling away and at least challenge the places at a decent price.
3:35 Newbury
The finale on ITV comes up at 3:35 and it is novice handicap chase over the extended 2m6f distance.
I like SURREY QUEST (12/1) EW here. Nicky Henderson has the favourite in Bold Endeavour but it is the second string I like off a much lower weight. He stayed on well on chase debut at Uttoxeter last month where he stayed on strongly in the closing stages to finish third. He’ll have learn a lot from that as Henderson’s often do. We seen it on Boxing Day with Balco Coastal who came on leaps and bounds. He’ll enjoy the soft ground too.
