1:50 Goodwood
The opener is the consolation race for the feature Stewards Cup. It is the Stewards Sprint Handicap over 6f.
I like ZAMAN JEMIL (3/1) NB here. He is an unexposed 3 year-old getting weight off his rivals and I’d fancy him to improve past them. He ran a career best when winning at Thirsk last time out off a mark of 86. He beat a few solid handicappers easily there and won going away at the line. A 6lb rise won’t so him in my opinion. Ryan Moore takes over which is the icing on the cake.
2:05 Newmarket
The first of two races from HQ is a fillies nursery handicap over the 6f distance.
It’s LADY WULFRUM (8/1) for me who I’d expect to show a lot of improvement now entering handicaps for the first time. She’s improved on each of her first three career starts and the last of those was a good third behind Hugo Palmer’s Soldier’s Call. She was only beaten a length and a half that day and that horse is now rated 90. Surely that means this mark of 71 is well within her reach.
2:25 Goodwood
The 2:25 from Goodwood is the Summer Handicap over the 1m6f trip.
It’s ADJUVANT (7/1) EW for me in this. He’s been in rude form this season going down a neck to HMS President on seasonal return before going one better and winning back at Newmarket a couple of weeks later. He ran a cracker in the Northumberland Plate finishing a not far beaten 5th. He ran out of gas late on there so this drop in trip looks a positive. He’s only up a 1lb for that effort and stall 5 makes life easier today. He travels well through his races which is a positive round a speedy track like Goodwood and Dettori is an eye-catching jockey booking here.
2:40 Newmarket
The 2:40 is the Chalice Stakes, a listed race for the fillies and mares over 1m4f.
It’s SWEET MEMORIES (11/2) for me in this. She was a huge eye catcher on debut when finishing 4th at Wolverhampton. She then went to Newbury and was well fancied for what looked a decent novice stakes race on paper. She won that well showing a decent attitude with the front two pulling clear of the field. Dettori wasn’t hard on her there and she liked to still be learning on the job. This being just her third career start, you’d expect further improvement here and she looks a fair price.
3:00 Goodwood
The 3:00 race is the Lillie Langtry Stakes, a Group 2 race for the fillies and mares over 1m6f.
I feel like TIME LOCK (5/1) is slowly getting the hang of things and she’s the value in this. She’s bred to be very good but things haven’t exactly clicked yet this season after an encouraging 3 year-old campaign. She’s far from disgraced herself on either of her three starts this season but she certainly looks the type to get better with each run as she hasn’t been finishing her races as well as you’d expect. Ryan Moore is back in the saddle and I’m hopeful he can get a tune out of her. The Charlton stable know the family well and there’s a reason they’re persisting at Group level. Free Wind is a worthy favourite but at the prices, I’d give Time Lock an opportunity to prove he’s better than we’ve seen so far this season.
3:35 Goodwood
The feature is the always competitive handicap that is the Stewards Cup. 28 runners are set to go to post for the 6f sprint.
It’s APOLLO ONE (14/1) NAP for me in this. The 5 year-old have been in career best form this season and has ran three crackers. He deserves a big one like this. His last effort was in the Wokingham Stakes where he won his group and was unlucky to finish a gutsy second to a rejuvenated Saint Lawrence. He likes to bowl along out in front so Goodwood should suit a lot more than Ascot as it can be a lot more beneficial to be up near the front here. Stall 27 looks a good spot based on what we’ve seen this week too.
