ITV Racing Tips for Saturday 11th May from Ascot, Lingfield and Haydock
1:30 Ascot
We have three races from Ascot and the first is at 1:30, it is a 1m4f handicap.
I’ll chance top-weight THINK FIRST (8/1) EW here. He made an encouraging return to action at Epsom last time out finishing a good second in a similar handicap at a huge price. Surprisingly, he’s been dropped a pound for it and with that run under his belt, hopefully he can come forward again. He did look a little gassy so he’s entitled to come on for it.
1:50 Lingfield
The 1:50 at Lingfield is next up, a competitive 9 runner handicap.
The one for me is TRUE LEGEND (11/2) EW. A progressive horse last season who worked his way up the handicap from 63 to 89. He returns to action this year off a mark of 88 and I think that’s is well within reach. Being a 4 year-old he’s entitled to improve again this season for his shrewd connections. He can make the running and there is not much pace on here so he could easily get a soft lead. In an open race, I think he’s a fair each-way selection.
2:05 Ascot
It’s back to Ascot for the 2:05, a fillies handicap over the mile.
It is STRONG IMPACT (15/2) I like in this. She only had the 2 runs last season as a 3 year-old, firstly finishing second at Sandown before winning as easily as she wanted on her final start at Epsom. She’s returned to action and finished 4th at Chelmsford but she certainly looked in need of that outing. She drops back to a mile and with plenty of front-runners in the line-up, I’ll take a chance on her improving for it with that run under her belt.
2:25 Lingfield
The 2:25 at Lingfield is the Oaks trial, the listed contest is run over just shy of the Oaks trip.
I think DANIELLE (5/4) will take fair bit of beating here. She’s improved for each of her three outings and the style of her victory last time out at Wetherby suggests she’s a filly of massive potential. She’s trained by the right connections as the Gosden’s have a fine record with their 3 year-old fillies and I’d expect her to improve again here and prove to be a tough nut to crack.
2:40 Ascot
The last race from Ascot on ITV is the 2:40, the always competitive Victoria Cup over the 7 furlongs.
I’d take a chance on RAMAZAN (14/1) EW here for the Richard Fahey stable. He went down a neck in the Ayr Gold Cup last season off a mark of 101 and with Joe Leavy claiming 5lb, he’s effectively a 1lb lower. He’s a strong travelling sort that looks sure to be suited by a big field handicap like this. I think Ascot will suit him well as it does often suit horses ridden off the pace due to the stiff finish. He’s returned to action with a second at Thirsk staying on well through the line and that should have put him spot on for this.
3:00 Lingfield
The 3:00 from Lingfield is the Derby Trial, a listed race over just shy of the 1m4f Derby trip.
It is DEFIANCE (9/4) NB for me here. An impressive debut victory for the Roger Varian stable last season at Sandown, he then ran respectably enough in the Royal Lodge on his just second career start last September. After another winter on his back, he made a highly encouraging return to Epsom last time out coming from off the pace to finish a good second in the Blue Riband Stakes. He will come on for that run and I don’t think this is a deep renewal of this race by any stretch of the imagination. If he does improve from that run as I expect, I think he can land this.
3:15 Haydock
We head up North for a competitive renewal of the Swinton Handicap hurdle over the 2 mile trip.
You’d do well to get LARK IN THE MORNIN (5/2) NAP beat here. The winner of the Boodles at the Cheltenham Festival, he looks a worthy favourite here. That win at Cheltenham was on heavy ground and he looks sure to improve for quicker ground which he gets today. I think he’s a graded performer and I’m sure he’s better than a mark of 130. He’s a horse on a serious upward curve and there is nothing in here he should be too worried about.
3:35 Lingfield
The finale at Lingfield is the Chartwell Fillies Stakes, a Group 3 over 7f.
I can’t see REMARQUEE (6/5). The 4 year-old was a winner on her racecourse debut and on her seasonal debut last season so she obviously goes well fresh. She comfortably has the best form in the race based on her efforts at Group 1 level in the Coronation Stakes and the Falmouth Stakes last season. If she returns anyway close to her normal level, she will take the world of beating.
