1:30 Kempton
First up on ITV is a trappy 3m handicap chase with only two places available for each-way punters.
The one I like in ANNSAM (10/3). He should be able to dictate things from the front here which sees him to best effect. He is well suited by flat right handed tracks and relishes underfoot conditions which is the combination he will get today. His first two runs this season have been slightly underwhelming but he’s been dropped 4lb as a result and I expect a bold show today.
1:50 Warwick
We start at Warwick with the Grade 2 Hampton Court Novices Chase over the 3m trip.
The one for me here is COMPLETE UNKNOWN (6/5) NAP. A real chaser in the making, he won the EBF Final at Sandown last year which is a race that always works out well. He looks like he’ll continue to improve and his win last time at Ffos Las was a very good effort where his jumping was an asset close to home. The deep ground will suit sad Paul Nicholls can’t do a lot wrong at present. The chief market rivals hail from the Skelton and Elliot yards and them stables aren’t in the form you’d expect.
2:05 Kempton
It’s more Grade 2 action next as we have the Silviniaco Conti Chase over 2m4f.
I worry for Pic D’Orhy on this ground and I think he may travel the best but be outstayed late on. The one I like is SAINT CALVADOS (7/2). The jockey is an obvious concern but I’m hoping he can get the fractions right today and not kick on too early. The horse ran a cracker at this track in the Grade 1 King George in December 2021. He looked the winner that day turning for home before his stamina gave in. This 2m4f trip round here if they go fast on soft ground could well prove to be his optimum conditions. I’d be hoping the run last time out at Ascot took the freshness out of him and he’ll give Maxwell an easier ride. At the prices, I’ll take a chance.
2:25 Warwick
The 2:25 contest is another Grade 2, it is the Ballymore Leamington Novices Hurdle over 2m5f.
A tricky race where all horses hold their chances. I’ve landed on SNAKE ROLL (7/2) NB for the Lucinda Russell stable. This horse is really high regarded at the yard and they believe it may be the best they’ve ever had. That is a striking comment given the horses they’ve had. I got the impression things were starting to click for the horse when powering away to win eased down at Newcastle last time out by 14l. He made all that day and he’ll sit handy again today I’m sure which is a positive at Warwick. The ground should be fine.
2:40 Kempton
The feature handicap from Kempton comes up at 2:40 and it’s a decent renewal of the Lanzarote Hurdle ran over 2m5f.
I like HERMES BOY (12/1) EW here. His last two runs have suggested this step up in trip could be just what he needs. He’s been done for speed before staying on to finish fourth at Sandown, and second last time out at Uttoxeter. He sneaks in this off bottom weight, running off 10’2 which is ideal given the likely tiring conditions. Trainer Jane Williams is in fine form and brings an excellent record to Kempton. I’d be surprised if he’s out the frame at a decent each-way price with the enhanced place terms on offer.
3:00 Warwick
The 3:00 from Warwick is the competitive Classic Chase, a real stamina test for the stayers over 3m5f.
I can’t see there being many finishers here given the trip and the ground. You won’t a horse that stays all day and loves deep ground. That sounds perfect for LORD DU MESNIL (6/1) EW. Richard Hobson has returned to form this season after an awful campaign last year and hopefully that can continue here. This horse was a big drifter on seasonal return, suggesting he’d come on for the effort at Bangor. He ran an absolutely cracker that day, finishing second behind the Hennessy winner Le Milos. If he can run to that level, or arguably even improve for that effort, it’s hard to see him not going close here. He sits handy which like I said earlier, is well suited by Warwick and he’s one of only a few that will relish the deep ground over an extreme trip.
3:35 Warwick
The last race on ITV comes up at 3:35 and it is a Pertemps qualifier handicap hurdle over 3m1f.
It’s GLIMPSE OF GALA (11/2) EW for me here. I think she is one of only a few that will be trying 100% here. She was an impressive winner over the festive period at Christmas, showing she’s all stamina when staying on strongly to win by over 4L. She is only up 5lb for that win and this consistent sort can run another big race under 7lb claimer Bradley Roberts who won on her last time out.
