ITV Racing Tips for Saturday 23rd November from Ascot, Haydock and Punchestown

ITV Racing Tips

1:15 Haydock

The first race from Haydock on ITV comes up at 1:15, a 2m3f handicap hurdle.

I do like top-weight STEEL ALLY (7/1) in here for the Sam Thomas stable. The progressive sort returned to action in the Welsh Champion Hurdle last month where he and stablemate Lump Sum pulled nicely clear of the field and both looked useful. Steel Ally finished second that day but he effectively runs off the same mark here with Dylan Johnston claiming 3lb. He has race fitness on his side and I think this step up in trip will bring out further improvement. He looks to hold a solid chance.

1:30 Ascot

We have three races from Ascot. First up at 1:30, the Grade 2 1965 Chase over 2m5f.

It is hard to get away from PIC D’ORHY (1/2) here who looks to have been given an ideal seasonal reappearance here as this looks a weak Grade 2. He won this race last year and is expected to him to win it again. Dashel Drasher is the main danger but he’s approaching 12 and it would be a big ask on seasonal debut for him to overturn the Nicholls charge.

1:50 Haydock

The 1:50 from Haydock is a Graduation Chase over the extended 2m5f trip.

It is IROKO (15/8) NAP for me here. A really good novice hurdler in 2022/23, he finished off with a taken victory in the Martin Pipe at the Cheltenham Festival. He then went novice chasing last season and was a very impressive winner on chase debut at Warwick where he jumped like a seasoned pro and didn’t come off the bridle. Sadly, he got injured after that and I felt as though he may have been rushed back to make the Spring festivals. He ran a solid enough race at Cheltenham before going to Aintree in April and running a cracker in finishing second behind Gold Cup hope Inothewayurthinkin. That is a solid piece of Grade 1 form. He has now had a nice summer break and we know he goes well fresh based on last season. I think he could go to the top this year and it’ll start with victory here.

2:10 Punchestown

It’s a fascinating renewal of the Grade 1 Morgiana Hurdle over the extended 2-mile trip.

It is STATE MAN (4/5) for me who I expect will fend off the youngsters on this occasion. He’s a superstar, 12 wins from 13 starts which included the Champion Hurdle last season. He loves Punchestown and has landed this race in both 2022 and 2023. He’s the mount of Paul Townend which is a significant positive and I think he’ll dictate this from the front and prove tough to pass yet again.

2:30 Haydock

Next up at 2:30 is the competitive stayers handicap hurdle over an extended 3-mile trip.

It is CATCH HIM DERRY (13/2) I like here. Considered the second string for the Skelton stable, he definitely should not be underestimated in here. He’s on a serious upward curve and I was impressed with his victory last month at Newbury where he stayed on strongly to beat a rejuvenated Flight Deck. He’s won over 3 miles and sneaks into this off a lovely racing weight. He’s the one for me in this competitive affair.

2:45 Ascot

The 2:45 from Ascot is the Ascot Hurdle, a Grade 2 over an extended 2m3f.

I think GOLDEN ACE (2/1) NB is a mare who can go right to the top and I would be disappointed if she wasn’t up to winning this based on her efforts last season. 4 runs last season, she won all 4 including the Mares Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham in taken fashion where she fended off the highly promising Brighterdaysahead. This distance is fine for her as she won over 2m4f on her final start of her novice hurdle campaign. If she was trained by a different yard, she’d be odds on for this.

3:05 Haydock

The feature is up next, the Grade 1 Betfair Chase over the extended 3m1f.

It’s AHOY SENOR (6/1) for me who I think will love this type of test Haydock has to offer. He’s a strong galloper who is well suited by a flat track as his Aintree record shows. He made a very encouraging seasonal return in the Old Roan Chase last month over an inadequate trip and I’d expect that has put him spot on for this. This looks like it’ll be a real test given the weather and the fact he has proven stamina and race fitness on his side looks to be a huge positive. The stable remains in rude form and I think this may be his big day. I do respect Grey Dawning and I think he’s the best horse in the race. However, he will improve for this return and I’d be happy to leave him alone at the prices.

3:20 Ascot

It is back to Ascot for the 3:20, a 2m1f handicap chase.

I like SANS BRUIT (5/1) here for the Harry Cobden & Paul Nicholls duo. An impressive front-running victory last season in the Red Rum Handicap Chase at Aintree, there was plenty of encouragement to take from his seasonal reappearance in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter. He finished third there jumping as well as ever and just tiring late on. That effort should have brought him on and Ascot is a track that can really suit these bold jumping front runners as they can get the rivals into trouble a long way from home. I think that may be the case here.

3:40 Haydock

The final race from Haydock is a handicap chase over the same course and distance as the Betfair Chase.

It’s MY SILVER LINING (10/1) EW I like here. She excels over staying trips and enjoys soft ground conditions and she looks sure to get that combination here. The Classic Chase winner of last season, she followed that up with some fine efforts both here at Haydock and again in the Midlands National at Uttoxeter. She pulled up on his reappearance this season which isn’t ideal but I’m happy to give her the benefit of the doubt and hopefully, she can resume his improvement now with that run under her belt. The Emma Lavelle stable are in fine form so this may just be the time to get back involved.
