ITV Racing Tips for Saturday 25th May: Haydock, York, Goodwood and the Irish 2000 Guineas
1:15 Haydock
The first race in the Silver Bowl handicap over the mile trip.
It’s VOLTERRA (4/1) I like in this. He had a progressive profile at two improving for each of his three outings with cumulated in a victory at Redcar on his final start. However, it was his comeback victory at Newmarket three weeks ago that really caught the eye. He looked to have come on over the winter and he won impressively staying on strongly through the line despite taken a hold. That form has been boosted since and he’s entitled to come on for it given he looked fresh. A mark of 91 could underestimate him still.
1:30 Goodwood
The opener from Goodwood is a 7f handicap for the 3 year-olds.
I’ll give BLUE PRINCE (10/1) EW a chance here in a competitive race. He was very eye-catching last time at York finishing strongly from off the lace to grab third close to home. He was given a lot to do there and I’d be hopeful Tom Marquand has him more prominent today. Blue Prince seemed to settle better in the first-time hood there and it’s encouraging that the hood stays on today. It was generous of the handicapper to leave him on the same mark and I think this previous course winner can run a big one here as a result.
1:50 Haydock
It’s Group 2 action next at Haydock, the competitive Temple Stakes over 5f.
The ground has come right for VADREAM (5/1) NB and she should take a fair bit of beating in this. The six year-old made a pleasing return to action finishing a good second at Newmarket three weeks ago on good ground. The return to a softer surface is an obvious plus and I like the fact she’s coming here under ideal conditions with a run under her belt to put her spot on. She just looks sure to run a big race here and she’ll do for me.
2:05 Goodwood
We head back to Goodwood for the 2:05 contest, a listed race for the 3 year-old fillies over 1m2f known as the Height Of Fashion Stakes.
It is hard to get away from FRANCOPHONE (10/3) here who brings the strongest piece of form to the table. She was a good second last week in the Musidora Stakes last week and this is a weaker contest. If she runs near that level of form, she should be winning this. The Johnston stable are no stranger to turning their horses out quickly so I see that as no negative today.
2:25 Haydock
The 2:25 from Haydock is the Sandy Lane Stakes, a Group 2 over 6f for the 3 year-olds.
It’s INISHERIN (5/1) EW for me here at the prices. Van Deek could be special but I wouldn’t be keen on the price on his comeback run as a 3 year-old. The selection however has already returned to action with a fine effort in the 2000 Guineas finishing sixth. He was bang there until fading late on and this drop back to sprinting could bring out further improvement. He’s a solid alternative to the favourite.
2:45 York
The first of two lives races from York comes up at 2:45 and it is a 5f handicap.
It’s RABAAH (4/1) I like here. Despite finishing 11th on his seasonal return at Newmarket, there was plenty of encouragement from it. He took a keen hold and travelled strongly before fading late on and looking green. He just looked in desperate need of the run and this speedier test of York should suit a lot more. The Charlie Hills stable are in better form now and a lot of his horses have come on for their first outing. I’d expect the same for this horse and I have no doubt he’s a much better horse than his current mark of 95.
3:00 Haydock
It’s back to Haydock for the 3:00, a 7f handicap for the 4 year-olds and above.
I like ZIP (7/2) here who has been unlucky to not get his head in front on his last two outings firstly here at Haydock before last time at Newcastle. This race doesn’t look any deeper than them last two races he ran in so it’s hard to not see him being bang there again. He’s proven in the mud and he’s a course and distance winner here at Haydock too which is an obvious plus.
3:20 York
The final race from York on ITV is the 3:20. It is the Bronte Cup Fillies Stakes, a Group 3 over 1m6f.
I like RIVER OF STARS (7/2) NAP here. This race looks no deeper than the renewal she won last season and I’d expect connections to have her spot on to try and repeat the feet here. She brings a solid level of form to the table and handles any ground conditions. She’s arguably a Group 2 horse running in a Group 3. She sets the standard here and if she’s ready to go first time out, she’ll take the beating for the Ralph Beckett team.
3:30 Haydock
The 3:30 from Haydock is a handicao for the stayers over 2 miles.
I’d chance SOLENT GATEWAY (20/1) EW at the prices here. The winner of this race 12 months ago, he returns this year off a 4lb lower mark so if on a going day, there’s no reason he can’t go very close again. Things haven’t quite gone to plan recently but with the cheekpieces returning and Oisin Murphy booked for the ride, there is reason to go be optimistic he can return to form today. He’ll sit handy and Murphy is a very good judge of the pace which could be crucial.
3:40 Curragh
The feature race ends proceedings on ITV, the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas over the mile.
I’ll chance MOUNTAIN BEAR (20/1) EW here at the prices. He had plenty of action as a 2 year-old that resulted in a fine effort finishing second at Santa Anita on his final start. That effort can be marked up as he started slowly and had to come wide to make his challenge. There is no reason he can’t improve again this year and this previous course winner can put his experience at 2 to use here and outrun his big odds.
