1:15 Cheltenham

The opener on ITV is the 1:15 and it’s a competitive handicap chase over the extended 2m4f trip.

I’ll take a chance on BILL BAXTER (12/1) EW here. He had a cracking season last year winning four times which included the Topham Chase at Aintree back in April. Things haven’t exactly gone to plan this season but he’s dropped 5lb in the handicap for his last two efforts. He normally likes to get on with things and in the main, his jumping can be an asset. That’s a great combination for these handicap chases at Cheltenham and with Sam Twiston-Davies taken the ride, I’m willing to give him another chance to bounce back to form.

1:50 Cheltenham

Next up is the Grade 2 Cotswold Chase with six intriguing runners set to line-up.

It’s the novice for me here, STAY AWAY FAY (3/1). Paul Nicholls’ charge won the Albert Bartlett last year at the Festival showing his potential class and relishing the hill up the run-in. He was also going to be a better chaser and he’s shown a willing attitude in winning both his novice chase starts. Firstly, he battled back strongly at Exeter on debut to beat The Changing Man and Grey Dawning, the latter has boosted the form since. He then went to Sandown and again showed us his tenacious qualities to beat an on-song Giovinco who appeared to be travelling the strongest 2 out. He is improving all the time and we know Cheltenham will suit him well. He jumps like a seasoned veteran and I’m happy to chance him here in a race where nothing jumps off the page.

2:05 Doncaster

The Yorkshire Rose Mares Hurdle is the first race from Doncaster and it’s a very good renewal of the 2m Grade 2.

It’s ASHROE DIAMOND (11/8) for me here. She brings the strongest form to the table and this may well be the weakest race she’s contested for a while. She’s normally pitched in against the geldings and when she does run against her own sex, she has a fine record. She’s had a run under her belt which has to be a positive as Gala Marceau is making her seasonal return and Under Control bombed out on her return.  I think she enjoys a flat track as shown at Aintree two years ago, so Doncaster should suit her well. She’s uncomplicated and she’ll do for me.

2:25 Cheltenham

It’s back to Cheltenham for the 2:25, the re-arranged Grade 1 Clarence House Chase for the 2 mile chasers.

It’s a no bet race here as JONBON looks set to kick this lot out of the way before a rematch with El Fabiolo beckons back here in March.

2:40 Doncaster

The 2:40 from Doncaster is the Albert Bartlett River Don Novices Hurdle, a Grade 2 over the extended 3 miles.

I like I LOVE MY BAIE (8/1) EW here for Daryl Jacob and Shawn Crawford. He has shown significant improvement when stepping up to 2m4f for the first time last time at Ayr powering clear to win by 7 lengths. He wasn’t stopping there on soft ground and I think this further step up in trip could bring out even more improvement. He’s a consistent sort and comes here with three runs under his belt which I like in a race of this nature. He seems a lot more battled hardened than some of his rivals and I’m hoping he can put that experience to good use here. Daryl Jacob is having a fine time of things at present and is riding full of confidence.

3:00 Cheltenham

The 3:00 is the Unibet Hurdle, also known as the International Hurdle. It’s a Grade 2 over 2m1f.

I’m happy to take Lossiemouth on here on her seasonal return. We know it can be hard for 5 year-olds in their first season out of juvenile company and at the prices she’s worth taking on.

LOVE ENVOI (5/2) NB sets a high standard and if she improves from her seasonal return at Sandown as connections expect, she’ll be a tough nut to crack here in my book. She was a fine second in the Grade 1 Mares Hurdle last season behind superstar Honeysuckle at the Festival and that is easily the best piece of form on offer in this line-up. She handles all types of ground and has form over this 2 mile trip so that shouldn’t be an issue. She’s a quicker horse than given credit for normally. Trainer Harry Fry also appears in better form now than when she last ran which is an added bonus.

3:15 Doncaster

The final race from Doncaster comes up at 3:15 and it is the Great Yorkshire Handicap Chase over 3m.

It’s SURREY QUEST EW I’ve landed on here. He’s shown a decent chunk of improvement this season winning both his starts since moving to the Toby Lawes yard. Firstly, he won well at Huntingdon in taken fashion before showing that was no fluke when winning the competitive Mandarin Handicap Chase at Newbury last time. The front two pulled 17 lengths clear that day so a 7lb rise seems more than fair. That was his first run after a wind operation too so arguably he could be seen to even better effect on his second start after. He’s an improving sort that has proven stamina which is a decent combination in a race like this.

3:35 Cheltenham

The final race on ITV is the Cleeve Hurdle, a Grade 2 ran over 3 miles.

I think NOBLE YEATS (3/1) NAP is an interesting contender in this and he’s the one I’ve landed on. The 2022 Grand National winner is being aimed at the Stayers Hurdle this year and it’s easy to see why as it’s a wide-open division. Regarding this race, I think Champ will go a decent enough gallop in this and the quicker they go the better for Noble Yeats. It was only last year he was finishing 4th in the Gold Cup and 4th in a Grand National so he’s certainly good enough. He’s only nine and is still fairly lightly raced for his age. His main market rivals in here have now turned 12 years old and they just have to be declining. Harry Cobden is a really good jockey booking too.
