ITV Racing Tips for Saturday 3rd August from Glorious Goodwood and Newmarket
1:50 Goodwood
Our first race is the Glorious Stakes, a Group 3 race over 1m4f.
It is RELENTLESS VOYAGER (4/1) for me here. The Andrew Balding charge has had an encouraging start to his season and I get the impression there is more in the locker. He returned to action with an encouraging third before winning a decent handicap at Epsom on Derby day. He ran well at listed level finishing third at York when we last seen him over 1m5f. He drops back to 1m4f and from stall 1, Oisin Murphy may be able to dictate this small field from the front.
2:05 Newmarket
The first of two lives race from HQ is a fillies nursery handicap over the 6f distance.
I like ART DESIGN (5/1) NAP in this for the Haggas yard. Improving for each of her first three outings, I expect to see a chunk of improvement as she now enters handicaps off what appears to be a lenient mark of 71. She was green and in need of experience on her first two outings but there were clear signs of ability on her last start at Thirsk where she finished a good second behind Li Ban who has some fancy entries in the latter half of the season. Handicaps have always looked the plan and I think she turn her handicap debut into a winning one.
2:25 Goodwood
The 2:25 from Goodwood is the Summer Handicap over the 1m6f trip.
It is TRUE LEGEND (10/1) EW for me here for the duo of Sir Mark Prescott and Luke Morris. He certainly has a race of this nature in him and he was unlucky not to win here three starts ago when going down a short head over this course and distance. He then went to the Northumberland Plate and made up significant ground from last to finish a never nearer 5th which definitely caught the eye. Again, he put up another consistent effort when third beaten a length at Ascot last time out and I’m hoping his turn is near. Connections have got the cheek-pieces back on today and hopefully, that can squeeze out that little bit more for him to get head back in front.
2:40 Newmarket
The 2:40 from Newmarket is the Chalice Stakes, a listed race for the fillies and mares over 1m4f.
It’s FAIRY GLEN (7/2) NB for me here. She improved significantly from her debut to win her next two starts impressively at Wolves and then at Kempton when we last saw her. She displayed a really useful turn of foot at Kempton last time out and she looked a filly of serious potential moving forward. She’s bred to be very good and the Crisford yard are banging in the winners at the moment. She switches to the turf here but on breeding it should prove to be no problem. She’s still completely unexposed and she’s a filly I think could be a Group performer sooner rather than later.
3:00 Goodwood
It’s back to Goodwood for the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes next. A race for the fillies and mares over 1m6f.
I think SUMO SAM (14/1) EW looks overpriced in this. She won this race last year from the front in decisive fashion before going on to Doncaster and winning the Park Hill Stakes showing that was no fluke. I’m hoping she’ll have needed her seasonal reappearance here at Goodwood earlier in the season and I’m sure this was always going to be here main aim. Connections have opted to give her a breathing operation and hopefully, that can help her return to form. At the prices, she’s worth chancing to bounce back.
3:35 Goodwood
We end the week with the competitive Stewards Cup handicap. 28 are set to go to post for the 6f contest.
It is PUROSANGUE (15/2) EW for me here. He was a really solid 2 year-old last season finishing second on three straight occasions before getting his head in front on his final start in a York listed contest. The 3 year-old has been a little hit and miss on his four starts this season but two of his efforts this season suggest he has to be well handicapped off 101. He has twice been placed at Group 3 level including a career best second at Sandown when we last seen him behind the solid Makarova. He handles all ground conditions and from stall 14, Murphy will have options. He’s unexposed and this type of race could bring the best out of him.
