ITV Racing Tips for Saturday 7th May at Ascot, Haydock and Lingfield

Our ITV Racing tips for this weekend come from Ascot, Lingfield and Haydock and we have Oaks and Derby trials to focus on at Lingfield.
1:45 Ascot
A great day of punting with plenty of great betting races starts at 1:45 with a 1m4f handicap at Ascot.
My selection is JUAN DE MONTALBAN (8/1) NAP. He made an encouraging return to action at Thirsk last month finishing fourth in a race that is working out well. That effort was on soft ground and he’ll definitely be better suited to the quicker ground that he should get here. He has been dropped a pound for that run and that should have brought him on a bit too. He ran at Group level last season so he has scope to win these type of handicaps off around this mark this season in my opinion and I think today could be the day.
2:05 Lingfield
The first race live from Lingfield is the 2:05 and it is a 7f handicap.
The selection is VERREAUX EAGLE (9/4). The Ed Dunlop team are in decent form here and she ran a cracker last time out beaten a short head at Brighton. This race doesn’t look the strongest of races on paper and with William Buick taking over, I think she’s bound to go close.
2:20 Ascot
The 2:20 from Ascot is a listed contest, the Buckhound Stakes over 1m4f.
I think AL AASY (13/8) will take this. Hes always at his best at the start of the season and this is certainly his level. He looks like a world beater a lot of the time when winning Group 3 and Listed races before failing to step up when upped in class. This is obviously a listed race and it isn’t very strong. Therefore, I expect him to win again at this level on the bridle.
2:40 Lingfield
The first key classic trial comes up at 2:40 and it’s the Derby trial over 1m4f.
I think WALK OF STARS (Evs) can win a Derby so I have to put him up here. I think 4/5 is actually a fair price in this. I think he will have learnt a lot for that victory at Newbury last time out where he finished off strongly to just get up over 1m2f. He’s going to come on plenty for that effort and he’ll have learnt a lot from it. He will appreciate this step up in trip too.
3:00 Haydock
The competitive 2m Swindon Handicap Hurdle gives jumps fans their chance and it’s a wide open renewal.
The one I like is SEVERANCE (9/1) EW. The Ben Pauling team had a nice ITV winner earlier this week and I think this lad can go really close. Another horse who’ll be well suited by this quicker ground here at Haydock. He ran a great race after a wind operation last time out at Aintree finishing second behind Hacker Des Places who is a decent sort for Nicholls. The strike rate of horses on their second run after a wind operation is encouraging and he’ll be staying on strongly over this fast run 2m.
3:15 Lingfield
The second trial and this time it’s the girls turn, the Oaks trail over 1m4f.
It’s EMILY DICKINSON (6/4) for me here for the Aiden O’Brien stable. After a fine week at Chester, they can win yet another trial here with this filly. The daughter of Dubawi took a significant step forward last time out coming from off the pace to get up on the line at Naas over 1m2f. Bound to improve again I’m sure and bound to improve for this extra 2f, it’ll take a good one to beat her.
3:30 Ascot
We head back to Ascot for the 3:30 and it is a trappy fillies handicap over the mile.
I’ll chance the rank outsider DONT TELL CLAIRE (11/1) EW
3:50 Lingfield
The 3:50 from Lingfield is the Group 3 Chartwell Fillies Stakes over 7f.
I’ll chance THUNDER BEAUTY (13/2) here for the David O’Meara team. She was a decent two-year old but lost his way a lot at 3 when trained with Condon in Ireland. David O’Meara often revitalises horses that are moved to his stable and the selection ran a cracker on his last start and just his second start for the stable when fourth last time out at Ascot. William Buick is a positive jockey booking and hopefully she can continue to find her way back to top form here.
4:05 Ascot
The finale on ITV is another cracker of a handicap, the Victoria Cup over 7f.
I’ve landed on FRESH (8/1) EW. He’s a horse well suited by this type of race and still only five, I think he can still show improvement off this current mark. He has strong form here at Ascot and he will be staying on better than most over this 7f trip. He’s had a comeback run finishing second at Kempton and arguably he should have got up that day going down a short head. That’ll have put him spot on for this today and he’ll go close.
