1:15 Newbury

A competitive handicap chase over just shy of 3m starts proceedings on ITV and it’s a decent betting heat.

The one I like is COURT MASTER EW (14/1). A previous course and distance winner who likes it here at Newbury I think he can go well at a nice each way price. He has a lovely racing weight for this and Im hoping he can return to form on the back of a wind operation after his disappointing seasonal return. He’ll be suited by today’s ground and I’m hoping Richard Patrick takes him forward and gets him in a nice jumping rhythm.

1:30 Newcastle

The 1:30 race from Newcastle is a 4 runner handicap chase limited to novices over the 3m trip.

I’ve landed in COOPERS CROSS (3/1) here. He relished the step up in trip to 2m4f last time out at Sedgefield where he rallied gamely to win close home. He now goes up to 3m for this contest and I think that will bring out further improvement.

1:50 Newbury

The 1:50 from Newbury is next up and it is a trappy handicap hurdle over the intermediate trip of 2m4f.

The one for me here is CH’TIBELLO (10/1). He returns to handicap company for the first time since landing the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival back in 2019 and the strong pace likely today will certainly suit him well. On the majority of his recent efforts he hasn’t disgraced himself and the fact he’s only a 1lb higher than when winning that handicap in 2019, I think he’s overpriced. The Skelton’s do well in these type of races.

2:05 Newcastle

The 2:05 race is a competitive renewal of the Rehearsal Chase over the 3m distance.

I like THE FERRY MASTER NB (5/1) here. He’s an unexposed sort who we may have not since the best of yet. This has been the target for quite some time and trainer Sandy Thomson knows what it takes the win this given the fact he trained the winner last year. This horse is a previous course and distance winner here at Newcastle which is another plus and he has a lovely racing weight for this contest.

2:25 Newbury

The 2:25 from Newbury is another 4 runner affair. This time over the minimum trip of 2m on the hurdles course.

Short and sweet, I’d expect SOARING GLORY (5/4) to take this. He should have too much speed for his rivals here over 2m and the Betfair Hurdle winner looked like he had improved for another summer on his back when winning a decent handicap on his seasonal debut last month. Tough to beat.

3:00 Newbury

The feature comes up at 3:00 and it the forever competitive Ladbrokes Trophy over an extended 3m1f. We have seen some great winners of this in the last and hopefully we have another today.

I think EKLAT DE RIRE NAP (7/2) is a great bet here. The unexposed second season chaser who has only suffered one defeat over fences and that was when he fell at the Cheltenham Festival. Trainer Henry De Bromhead can’t do much wrong recently and he could well have another 3m chaser for the Gold Cup. A handicap mark of 154 seems very fair and I think he’ll win well if the jumping holds up.

3:15 Newcastle

Next up is the feature from Newcastle and it’s a decent renewal of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle, a Grade 1 over 2m.

I’d expect EPATANTE (6/4) to bounce back to form here. An impressive winner of this contest last year she was underwhelming in three starts since finishing second in the Christmas Hurdle before finishing third in the Champion Hurdle and Irish Champion Hurdle. That’s arguably still the strongest piece of form on offer and trainer Nicky Henderson believes she back to her best.

3.35 Newbury

The finale on a cracking day is the 3:35 from Newbury. A wide open handicap chase over 2m.

The one for me here is FRERO BANBOU (5/1). This horse looked in need of the run when behind one of the market leaders Grey Diamond at Ascot last month. That should have put him spot on for this and I’d expect him to reverse that form today. He’s still unexposed and trainer Venetia Williams is slowly starting to bang the winners in. I think she could have another one here.
