ITV Racing Tips for the 10 Live Races from the Curragh & Doncaster on St Leger Day
Sunday gives us a bumper nine races from Doncaster and our Sunday racing tips covers five of them, as well as five races from over in Ireland including four Group 1s. Both the English and Irish St Leger are the big races of the day.
Doncaster was moved to Sunday in-line with the death of The Queen and so we are treated to two St Legers on one day. New London is the strong favourite to win the English Classic and 15 minutes later Kyprios will look to round off a brilliant season in the Irish equivalent.

1:35 Doncaster
The 1.35 race is the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes over 5f.
I think THE PLATINUM QUEEN (6/4) NAP will win this. I don’t think she’s the best horse in the race truth be told, I rate Trillium very highly but over 5f, I think the selection will have too much speed and will make all. She has substance to her form which resulted in a fine second place last time out in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes. A repeat bid will be enough I feel.
1:50 Curragh
The 1:50 from the Curragh is the Blandford Stakes, a Group 2 for the fillies and mares over 1m2f.
Three year-olds have a good record in this and it’s ABOVE THE CURVE (5/1) for me here. She was thought of as an Oaks filly early in the season and was unlucky not to win a trail at Chester back in May. That was still an encouraging effort and she went to France next time and won a Group 1 over there in taken fashion. She’ll love the cut in the ground and she’s a fast improving filly who commands respect in this.
2:10 Doncaster
The 2:10 race from Doncaster is the Portland Handicap over 5 and a half furlong.
I like COUNT D’ORSAY (10/1) EW here for the Tim Easterby stable. An in and out sort but on a going day, he’s more than capable of winning a race of this nature off this mark of 88. He continues to drop down the weights and now he gets softer ground for the first time which he relishes. There’s plenty of place on here which will sort his hold up style.
2:25 Curragh
The 2:25 is next up in Ireland and it is Group 1 action, the Flying Five Stakes over the 5f trip of course.
I like ROMANTIC PROPOSAL (6/1) EW
2:45 Doncaster
Next up we have the Doncaster Cup, a Group 2 for the top stayers over 2m2f.
I think Trueshan wins but there is no value. Therefore, I’ll take ISLAND BRAVE (66/1) EW (or betting without fav). He was a good winner for the column last weekend at Haydock at a nice price and I’m hoping he gets his own way in front again here. He’s a gutsy horse that is tough to pass on a going day and that win last time out was his best performance this campaign. This is of course a huge step up, but I’m hoping he can continue to the momentum with a brave effort here. 80/1 3 places will do.
3:00 Curragh
The 2 year-old fillies are next up for the Moyglare Stud Stakes, a Group 1 over 7f.
It’s TAHIYRA (4/1) NAP for me here. She was so impressive on debut when hosing up at Galway. That was with cut in the ground so these conditions will suit ideally. She’s a half sister to the great Tarnawa and connections will be hopeful she can follow in similar footsteps given that debut win. Dermot Weld continues in fine form and I think this filly can upset the favourite here.
3:20 Doncaster
The 3:20 from Doncaster is the Cazoo Park Stakes, a Group 2 over the 7f trip.
I’ll chance AL SUHAIL (9/2) NB here. Another horse who is certainly a little in and out but I get the impression he’d have needed the run last time out at York where he finished 5th behind todays favourite Kinross. I’m hoping they revert the the tactics that seen her to best effect here and that is from the front. There is no obvious pace angle here so if Buick can get to the front, I think she may well prove tough to get by if she comes forward as I expect.
3:35 Curragh
It’s the turn of the 2 year-old colts this time for the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes, again a Group 1 over 7f.
I can’t look past AESOPS FABLES (5/6) here. He was a course and distance winner here last time out where he had the second favourite Hans Andersen comfortably held back in second. I can’t see that form being reversed as I think the selection has more scope to continue improving. The remainder of the field aren’t good enough for me.
3:55 Doncaster
The 3:55 is the final classic of the season, the Group 1 Cazoo St Leger Stakes over 1m6f.
New London is a worthy favourite but I’m happy to take him on at the prices. The one for me is FRENCH CLAIM (10/1) EW. Trainer Paddy Twomey continues to have his operation in fine fettle and French Claim looks like he has been crying out for this step up in trip. Improving for each run, he was a decent third last time out in the Irish Derby plugging on well through the line. This extra 2f will assist as he’s more of a galloper than a horse with a turn of foot. I don’t think any rain will be a problem and I like the booking of Danny Tudhope.
4:10 Curragh
The final Group 1 comes up at 4:10 and it is the Irish St Leger over 1m6f.
It’s HAMISH (6/1) here for me at the prices. A horse that doesn’t get to the track all that often but when he does, he looks very talented. He was a decent winner last time out back in May when landing the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester. The break since won’t be a problem and the ground has come right for him. William Haggas obviously knows the time of day.
