ITV Racing Tips for Today from Haydock and Beverley
1:50 Haydock
The first race on ITV is the Achilles Stakes, a listed race over 5f.
It’s hard to get away from LIVE IN THE DREAM (Evens) here. He’s so fast so this 5f at Haydock on quick ground is going to be right up his street. He had a fine season last year which included a Group 1 victory in the Nunthorpe Stakes over this trip at York. He made his seasonal comeback here at Haydock last month in the Group 2 Temple Stakes and it was highly encouraging. He finished second that day behind Kerdos getting done close to home. That was on soft ground and obviously with that run under his belt, I’d expect the necessary improvement now under more ideal conditions. This race doesn’t look as deep either.
2:05 Beverley
The first of three live races from Beverley is the 2:05. It is a trappy conditional race over the minimum 5f.
It’s OVER SPICED (17/2) for me here. He improved from his debut effort to win well at Leicester on his next start. He showed a decent turn of foot before staying on well to fend the field off close to home. That was on good ground so today looks ideal. Tom Clover is a trainer going places and he can land a nice winner on ITV here.
2:25 Haydock
The 2:25 from Haydock is a 1m4f handicap for the 4 year-olds and above.
I like DIVINA GRACE (9/2) in this. This 4 year-old looked a progressive sort as he finished his 3 year-old campaign and I’d expect him to kick on further this season. He made a solid seasonal reappearance at Goodwood last month finishing a good third not beaten far. His best form comes on fast ground and he’ll get that here today. I think he looks sure to run a really big race here and he’s a solid selection in an open race.
2:40 Beverley
The 2:40 from Beverley is the Two Year Old Trophy over the speedy 5f trip.
It’s SHAREHOLDER (7/4) for me here. It’s hard to have a strong fancy given it’s his debut but he went for 460,000 euros at the Breeze Ups suggesting he must have looked a decent tool. He is bred to be very good and he is trained by the right man in Karl Burke as he does so well with his 2 year-olds. The market rivals have to carry penalties and it’s hard to give weight away at 2. I’d expect a winning start for Shareholder here before bigger targets await over the Summer.
3:00 Haydock
It’s back to Haydock for the 3:00, the Lestor Piggott Fillies Stakes, a Group 3 contest over 1m4f.
It’s SEA THEME (11/2) for me here. William Haggas sends her here for her seasonal reappearance and the early market vibes look encouraging that she’ll be ready to go. Haggas has a fine record in this race winning the last two renewals of the contest. She was a progressive 3 year-old improving from her debut effort to win her next two starts at Doncaster and York. Her last start at Newmarket can be ignored as she got worked up before the off and just didn’t run her race. I think there is plenty more to come from her this season and it can start with a bold bid here today.
3:15 Beverley
Next up is a wide open handicap over the extended 7f distance.
The one I’ve landed on in this is CLIFFCAKE (20/1) EW. He is very hit and miss but when on a going day, he’s capable of going close off this mark of 75. He’s a two time course and distance winner here at Beverley including this 7f handicap last year off 72. He will get similar ground today and if he can get to the front from stall 10, I think he’ll be able to hit the frame at least. Obviously, there is a few risks attached but I’m happy to take the chance at the prices in a wide open race where there’s bounds to be plenty of hard luck stories in behind.
3:35 Haydock
We ends proceedings with the 3:35, the John Of Gaunt Stakes. It is a Group 3 over 7 furlongs.
It’s RAMAZAN (13/2) EW for me here. Last season in his 3 year-old campaign, he had a fine season improving through the handicap ranks before finishing a very close 2nd at listed level on his final start at Redcar. That form has been boosted since. This season, he ran a cracker when we last seen him finishing second on the competitive Victoria Cuo Handicap at Ascot and that was arguably a career best performance. He deserves a shot at Group 3 level and this 7f trip around a bend could certainly suit well. There is plenty of pace on here and that should suit this hold up performer to come with a late run. The Richard Fahey stable can’t do anything wrong at the moment and therefore, Ramazan is the one for me at the prices.
