ITV Racing Tips for Today’s Cards at Newcastle and Newmarket
1:35 Newcastle
The opener from Newcastle is a trappy 6f handicap.
The selection is KING’S LYNN (7/1) EW here. He can be a frustrating sort and does need plenty of luck in running but at the prices I’ll chance him. He ran a cracker when third here two starts ago coming from last for a never nearer 3rd. He then went to Hamilton back down to 5f and found things happening a little too quick for him. I’m happy to see him returned to 6f back here at Newcastle and off a 2lb lower mark, I can see him running a big race.
2:04 Newcastle
Next up is the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes over the 6f trip.
I like MONTASSIB (9/2) NAP here for the Haggas yard. An impressive winner over 6f at Doncaster on seasonal return coming with a late run on soft ground to get up close to home. That form has worked out strongly since. He since went to York and that speed favouring track on good ground wouldn’t have suited. He needs a stiff test at this trio and he’ll get that here. He’s only ran one on the AW and it was a debut victory here at Newcastle so the surface should hold no fears. I think he can resume winning ways as I expect him to be a progressive sprinter this season under the right conditions.
2:15 Newmarket
We have three races from Newmarket with the first coming up at 2:15. It is a 6f listed contest for the fillies over 6 furlongs.
The one for me is TEEJ A (9/2). She’s done nothing wrong in three career starts and has improved for each outing. Her debut second was a race full of promise and she duly showed that to be the case when winning at the Chester May Meeting second up. She put that experience to good use when winning again last time out at Epsom staying on strongly to win comfortably at the line. She’s progressive and has a decent level of form in the book. I think she sets a high standard for this and some of the less exposed rivals will have to take a good chunk forward to be beating her today if she runs her race. She’ll do for me here for the Karl Burke yard who excel with their 2 year-olds.
2:35 Newcastle
The 2:35 from Newcastle is the a Northumberland Vase, a consolation race for the horses who we balloted out the Plate. It is over the extended 2 miles.
It’s ALPHONSO LE GRANDE (11/2) NB for me here. An impressive winner at Chester when we last seen him, he duly bolted up and looked to be improving. That was off the back of a victory at Dundalk so the AW surface isn’t a problem. He’s off a mark of 81 here against a lot of exposed sorts. I think he’ll take a lot of beating and he can improve past his rivals and win this here.
2:50 Newmarket
It’s back to HQ for the 2:50. It is the Fred Archer Stakes, a listed race over 1m4f.
It’s CRYSTAL DELIGHT (7/2) I’ve landed on in this. He has shown a real upturn in form since the switch to the Harry Eustace stable this season. He’s a trainer I have a lot of time for and I think he can get the selection to complete the hat-trick here. He has won his two starts this season in pretty decisive fashion. The first of those was at Epsom before making all to win a decent handicap at York last time out. He may well get his own time out in front again here and we know Newmarket is a track that can favour the front runners especially on a quick surface. He’ll do for me here.
3:10 Newcastle
The feature comes up at 3:10, the Northumberland Plate, a competitive handicap as always over the extended 2m.
It is DUKE OF OXFORD (12/1) EW for me in this. He progressed well as a 3 year-old towards the back end of 2023 winning twice at Kempton before finishing a decent third off this mark on New Years Day at this track. He returned to action with a fine second again here at Newcastle behind the progressive Prydwen who got first run on him. Ignore his run in the Chester Cup, he ran keen and was stuck out wide so had no chance. Back to Newcastle, I think he can resume his improvement and he definitely has the ability to win a race of this nature off his current mark. Hopefully today is that day.
3:25 Newmarket
The final race from Newmarket on ITV is the 3:25, the Group 3 Criterion Stakes over the 7f trip.
It’s POGO (11/2) for me here. Now 8 years-old but as consistent as ever as shown by his three efforts this season. He was fourth on his seasonal return at Sandown before going down by a short head at Haydock next time out pulling clear with the winner Shartash ahead of the re-opposing Witch Hunter who was back in third a few lengths behind. Pogo has since ran another cracker finishing 3rd not beaten far by Tiber Flow. He gets 3lb off that rival on this occasion and this track looks likely to suit Pogo more than Haydock did. He’s a previous course and distance winner here at Newmarket and this prominent racer can make a bold bid.
3:40 Newcastle
The finale on ITV is a wide-open 7f handicap at Newcastle.
I’ll take the 3 year-old here LOCAL HERO (11/2). He is totally unexposed given he’s only had four career starts winning two of them. I was taken with his victory at Kempton last time out where he displayed a decent turn of foot there to win going away. He could prove to be better than this mark of 91. He gets the weight for age allowance off all his rivals today and I’m happy to chance him in the finale.
