ITV Racing Tips for Wednesday 13th April from Newmarket and Cheltenham
ITV Racing tips for the second day of the Newmarket Craven meeting and a couple of races from Cheltenham on Wednesday 13th April where there two races over the jumps just a few weeks after the Festival.
1:30 Cheltenham
The first of two races from Cheltenham is the 1:30 which is a handicap hurdle over 2m4f.
The one for me here is BOLD PLAN (11/2). Winner on his last two starts staying on strongly to beat a decent yardstick in Dorking Boy last time I think he’s capable of completing the hat-trick for the in-form Evan Williams team. He’s won off a 5lb higher mark in the past so this mark is still within reach.
1:50 Newmarket
The 1:50 from Newmarket is a trappy handicap over the 6f trip.
My selection here is DIG TWO (15/2). The Hugo Palmer team will be itching to start the season with a bang after moving to Manor House Stables with Michael Owen and this lad can hopefully get them an ITV winner. He started his 2 year-old campaign last year impressively winning two races before finishing a fine second at Royal Ascot. He disappointed a little after that but he now returns freshened up, off the back of a wind operation and has been gelded over the winter. I think he can go close on his seasonal debut.
2:05 Cheltenham
The 2:05 from Cheltenham is another decent handicap, this time over the chase course. It is the Silver Trophy Handicap Chase over 2m4f.
The one I’ve landed on is STOLEN SILVER (7/2) NB. He was a good fourth behind favourite Coole Cody at the Festival in a competitive renewal of the Plate. He’s better off at the weights here and this return to quicker ground will certainly suit him well. He’s a consistent sort who looks sure to go close under optimum conditions.
2:25 Newmarket
Next up is the 2:25 from Newmarket and it is the Wood Dutton Maiden Stakes over the mile.
My selection is SECRET STATE (5/2). It’s hard to be confident as it’s a race full of promising 2 year-olds who are yet to see a race track. However, Charlie Appleby has a strong record with 2 year-olds, strong record at this track and this lad looks the part on paper. It’s a potent combination that’s hard to oppose if the market speaks in his favour.
3:00 Newmarket
The 3:00 race is the Abernant Stakes, a Group 3 contest over 6f.
The one for me here is BELLOSA (6/1) NAP She would probably be a lot shorter in the betting if she was trained by somewhere else but Jane Chappe-Hyam has done a fantastic job with her. She’s unbeaten in two starts here at Newmarket and her debut win here last season was scarily impressive. The soft ground wouldn’t have suited at Ascot before she returned to somewhere near what you’d expect when second at Kempton over 7f. This 6f certainly suits better in my opinion.
3:35 Newmarket
The 3:35 is the finale and it is the feature race of the day, the Craven Stakes over the 1m trip. Master of the Seas won it last year before running a close 2nd in the 2000 Guineas so eyes will be peeled and rightfully so.
I can’t get away from NATIVE TRAIL (4/11 – no bet) here sadly. A seriously impressive 2 year-old, I can’t see any reason to oppose him as he takes on his 3 year-old campaign. Charlie Appleby can do nothing wrong at present and if he’s trained on, he wins. Simple as that.
For the forecast, I’d chance Al Mubhir for the Haggas team who won well here on debut and can improve again.
