ITV Racing Tips for York and Goodwood on Saturday 24th August
1:50 York
We start Saturday with the Strensall Stakes, a Group 3 race over 1m1f.
I’ll take a swing on CHECKANDCHALLENGE (50/1) EW here at a huge price. He’s very talented at his best and he has some seriously smart back form. Things haven’t gone to plan yet this term but there is plenty of pace on here which will suit him well. He has a decent draw in stall 2 and the ground will be fine for him. Connections reach for cheekpieces which may just spark him back into life. It isn’t the deepest of Group 3’s and as a as a result I’m happy to take a chance.
2:05 Goodwood
The first of two live races from Goodwood is the 2:05. It is the Group 3 Prestige Fillies Stakes for 2 year-olds over 7f.
It’s TABITI (3/1) for me here. The daughter of Kingman was an impressive winner on debut at Newmarket two weeks ago and looks sure to come forward from that debut outing. Beckett is a master with the fillies and I think this filly can remain unbeaten and take this step into Group 3 in her stride. She showed a good attitude and a decent turn of foot to win on debut and she gets similar ground over the same trip again today. Her dad won at Group 1 level here at Goodwood and she can land this Group 3.
2:25 York
The 2:25 from York is up next, the Melrose handicap for 3 year-olds over 1m6f.
I like TACTICIAN (17/2) EW here despite Oisin Murphy opting for his stable mate Wild Waves. The 3 year-old is certainly progressing well and looks sure to prove better than his current mark of 91. He was an impressive winner over 2m at Ascot last time out staying on strongly to lead close to home. He drops to 1m6f here but there is plenty of pace on upfront and he looks sure to be coming home as well as everything. I think he can make a bold bid here.
2:40 Goodwood
The 2:40 from Goodwood is the Celebration Mile, a Group 2 contest for the 3 year-olds and above.
It is hard to get away from LEAD ARTIST (13/8) NB here who was an impressive winner over course and distance last time out at Glorious Goodwood and he looks a horse going places at a rate of knots. This is just his 5th career start and he is progressing well. He is a lot more unexposed than his rivals here and he can give the Gosden’s a welcomed winner. A worthy favourite.
3:00 York
We head back to York for the 3:00. It is the Group 2 City Of York Stakes over 7f.
It’s LAKE FOREST (4/1) NAP for me here for the duo of Tom Marquand and William Haggas. He’s been unlucky to not get his head in front this season staying on strongly on both runs to finish second. The first of those was a cracking effort in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup before he backed that up in the Hackwood Stakes last time out. He was a winner here last season when landing the Gimcrack and returning here looks a positive. He looks sure to relish the extra furlong here too based on his running style over 6f this season.
3:35 York
The feature handicap of the week is at 3:35. The always competitive Ebor handicap over 1m6f.
It’s EPIC POET (8/1) EW for me here. He was smart when racing on France but just didn’t seem to fire for Noel Meade on three starts at the yard. Since joining David O’Meara, he appears to be as good as ever. He was an unlucky second in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot doing all his best work close to home. He then went to the John Smiths Cup here and ran an eye-catching sixth again coming from off the pace weaving his way through the field. I think that’s was to put him spot on for this and they won’t be hanging round here from the get go which will suit him well. He’s a strong travelling sort and I expect him to stay the trip and go close.
4:10 York
The final race on ITV is the 4:10, the Constantine handicap over 6 furlongs.
I think APOLLO ONE (15/2) EW deserves to land one of these big handicaps and hopefully today is that day. He was last seen finishing a fine second in the Stewards Cup at Goodwood suggesting he arrives here in top form. He likes to sit handy which is key in these big York handicaps and stall 10 looks ideal based on what we’ve seen throughout the week. I’m hopefully Kingscote will bounce out and make them come and get him. He’ll be handy at the very least all being well. York looks sure to suit him well based on his running style and he looks a solid contender in an open race.
