ITV Racing Tips for York on Friday 25th August

1:50 York

The opener on the Friday of the York Ebor Meeting is a tricky handicap over the 1m4f trip.

I like MR CURIOSITY (25/1) EW here at a decent price. He was a good winner at Ripon two starts back before running a respectful 5th last time out at Goodwood. Ebor favourite Sweet William was the winner that day and it looked a decent handicap on paper. The heavy ground probably wasn’t ideal for the selection and back on a sound surface I think he can go well. Stall 2 gives David Allan to gain a nice easy prominent position and I think he’s overpriced.

 

2:25 York

The 2:25 sees a cracking renewal of the Lonsdale Cup, a Group 2 race over the extended 2 miles.

I think it’s the turn of COLTRANE (11/4) here. Despite winning on seasonal return at Ascot, he’s been quite unlucky in two starts since. Firstly at Royal Ascot in the Gold Cup he was just touched off by the re-opposing Courage Mon Ami and then at Goodwood last time, they all let Quickthorn go too far clear. I’d be very surprised if they allow that to happen again here and with their not being much between the three of them, the 3lb Coltrane receives from the other two main rivals might just prove decisive.

 

3:00 York

Next up at 3:00 it is the turn of the 2 year-olds with the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes over 6f.

It’s KINGS GAMBLE (7/1) for me here. Ralph Beckett can’t do a lot wrong at present and I was really taken with this horse’s debut effort when winning well at Newmarket over this trip. He looked really professional given it was the first time he seen a racecourse and Beckett’s always improve for their first outing. Again, stall 2 looks a good spot to be on the track over the sprint distances and he looks value in here.

 

3:35 York

The feature on Friday is the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes for the speedsters over 5f.

I think REGIONAL (9/1) EW is a fair price in this. He has shown really improved form this season winning both of his starts. The first of those was a decent handicap here at York before stepping up to listed level at Haydock and winning that. This is obviously a further step in class but he’s clearly thriving this season and has enjoyed the return to 5f. He’s drawn around the pace and should get a lovely toe into this of his main rivals who will go with the early pace. The horse he beat last time out did win the opening handicap off top weight here on Wednesday which is an added positive.

 

4:10 York

We end ITV coverage with a fillies handicap over the extended 1m2f.

I’d chance PRENUP (20/1) EW here in a tricky race where a number of them are open to significant amounts of improvement. However, Prenup seemed to relish the step up to 1m1f last time out and I see this extra furlong as a further positive. She made all there at Sandown and didn’t appear to be stopping at the line. From stall 6, I’m hoping jockey Harry Davies can get up with the pace again here and get a nice handy position. Despite being a four year-old she receives weight off all bar one of the 3 year-olds here too runing off a nice racing weight of 8’8.
