ITV Racing Tips for York on Thursday 24th August

1:50 York
The opener on Day 2 is the Lowther Stakes, a Group 2 for the 2 year-old fillies over the 6f trip.
I think RELIEF RALLY (9/4) will be tough to beat here. Arguably, should be unbeaten with his only defeat being a second-placed effort in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot where she’d have got up if the winning line was a yard further. It was hard not to be impressed with her victory last time out at Newbury powering clear to win by 3l. This step up to 6f looks sure to bring out further improvement based on what we’ve seen and she brings a strong level of form to the table today.
2:25 York
The 2:25 race is the Yearling Stakes, a competitive 2-year-old contest over 6f.
The one I’ve landed on is PERSICA (5/1). Richard Hannon does well in these races and he won this for the same connections in the past by an astonishing 11 lengths when Mums Tipple won. He was really green on debut and looked desperately in need of it. However, he was turned back out just three days later and despite still looking green, he looked to be getting the hang of it and managed to win well at Salisbury. I think he’ll come forward again and in an open race, I’ll put faith in Hannon and Levey.
3:00 York
Next up at 3:00 is the Clipper Handicap over the mile trip.
It’s ORBAAN (12/1) EW for me here. Trainer David O’Meara has a great record in these Mile handicaps and with his yard in decent form at present, I think he’ll have a few winners this week. Orbaan looks seriously well-treated based on last season’s form and this race could really set up well for him. He likes to be held up off a strong pace and he’ll definitely get that strong pace here with plenty of pace angles in this line-up. Last time out wouldn’t have suited him as they went slow and it proved tactical. However, he still stayed on to finish a never nearer 5th beaten just over 3 lengths. This will suit a lot more and I think he can run into a place at least if things go to plan.
3:35 York
The feature on Thursday is the Yorkshire Oaks. A Group 1 over the 1m4f trip for the fillies and mares.
I don’t think much of the 3-year-old fillies and at the prices, I’d be willing to give FREE WIND (5/1) another chance here. She has a fine win record and things just haven’t gone to plan on her last two starts. If she came straight here, she’d be favourite. However, those two runs were disappointing and she has to be forgiven. Firstly, she was 5th behind Pyledriver at Royal Ascot and just seemed to have an off day there. She wasn’t beaten far in the end and this race isn’t as strong as that one way anyway. She then went to Goodwood where she travelled into the race as well as anything but the ground was just ridiculous there and when Frankie realised the winner had flown, he didn’t give her a hard time. Prior to that, she won here at Group 2 level on her seasonal reappearance so coming back to York has to be a bonus. From what we’ve seen, from a sheer ability point of view, she’s the best of this lot and given she’s around 5/1, she’ll do for me to return to her best.
4:10 York
The 4:10 race is the Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes, a listed race over 1m4f again for the fillies and mares.
It’s a tricky race but THERE’S THE DOOR (18/1) EW looks the value to me. 3 year-olds have a fantastic record in this race so I’d be looking there for my selection. There’s The Door ran a career best when winning well at Goodwood last time out in a handicap that looked pretty strong on paper. She won that well enough and always looked in control to me. She likes to sit handy which is a good spot here at York a lot of the time especially on quick ground. I think that victory last time out will have given her a lot of confidence and she looks sure to go well at a decent each-way price.
