ITV Racing Tips for York on Wednesday 23rd August
1:50 York
The opener of the Ebor Meeting is a wide-open handicap over the extended 5f trip.
The one I like in this is INTRINSIC BOND (8/1) EW. A prominent racer with a low draw is a great combination in the sprint races here at York and Intrinsic Bond has just that. He appears to have relished his move to the Michael Wigham yard winning well on debut at Ascot before finishing a good second back there on Shergar Cup weekend. York should suit his running style more than Ascot as the front runners can get away from them here. Trainer Michael Wigham is in good form at present and Oisin Murphy is an eye-catching jockey booking.
2:25 York
Next up at 2:25 is the Acomb Stakes, a Group 3 for the 2-year-olds over 7f.
It’s BALLYMOUNT BOY (5/2) NAP for me here. I’m surprised he’s not shorter in the betting here based on the form of his second-placed effort last time out behind Vandeek at Glorious Goodwood. Vandeek obviously went on to win the Group 1 Prix Morny on Sunday pulling clear of promising 2 year-olds with the second. Vandeek and Ballymount Boy pair pulled 5l clear at Goodwood too and that is a really strong piece of form now. He was also a winner on good to soft prior to that at Haydock so I don’t think the ground will be a problem. He brings rock-solid Group level form to the table and it’ll take a proper one to be beating him today.
3:00 York
The 3:00 is the Group 2 Great Voltigeur States for the 3-year-old colts over 1m4f.
I can’t get away from GREGORY (5/4) here who is unbeaten in his three career starts. The final of those was a good victory at Royal Ascot in the Queen’s Vase, a race that always tends to work out well and is working out well enough from what we’ve seen to date this year. He was well fancied that day which says a lot about how he’s thought of at home and he’s open to significant further improvement given this is just his fourth career start. He’s a winner at Goodwood over 1m3f and he won his debut on fast ground so this track and trip shouldn’t be a problem. In a race that may prove tactical with only five runners, Frankie Dettori is a good man to have on board.
3:35 York
The feature on Day 1 is the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes over the extended 1m2f. A fascinating clash between Paddington and Mostahdaf with Nashwa and The Foxes completing the 4 runner line-up.
Not a strong view but I’d have to consider NASHWA (12/1) here. She is a top-class horse who’s proven at this level and there is a small chance the top market leaders get caught looking at each other which may just suit Nashwa and she can sneak up on them. She was an impressive winner of the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes two starts back at Newmarket before finishing 3rd in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood earlier this month last time out. She was staying on well despite things not going to plan that day and I’d expect Hollie Doyle to deliver her late today and hope to pick the others off over the same trip. In a race I haven’t got a strong view in, she makes the most appeal at the prices available based on the chance the front two take each other on early.
4:10 York
The final race on ITV is another decent handicap, this time for the stayers over the extended 2m trip.
It’s TRONADOR (9/1) EW for me here. He was really eye-catching when staying on from way off the pace to finish a never nearer 3rd in a Goodwood handicap over 2m4f on his latest start. I think he was ridden to stay the trip that day and over this 2m distance, you’d expect jockey Joe Fanning to sit a lot closer. I’d be hopeful he can reverse the form with Robert Johnson who finished second that day. Robert Johnson is a real galloper and would have enjoy that extreme trip on soft ground more than Tronador. He races off the same mark here and prior to that effort at Goodwood he was a good winner on his last flat start at Limerick so he knows where the winning line is. I think this could be his day if things drop right.
