1:05 Sandown
The opener on jumps finale day is the competitive Novices Championship Final Handicap Hurdle. 16 runners are scheduled to go to post for the 2m contest.
I like KILLOLOAN (11/2) here from the champion trainer Paul Nicholls. The five year-old looks a horse on a real upward curve at present. After a short career on the flat for Johnny Murtagh, it took him three attempts to get off the mark for Paul Nicholls where he went an average maiden hurdle. However, he has really kicked on from that and won two handicap hurdles since. I think he’s improving fast and a mark of 125 could still be on the lenient side.
1:40 Sandown
Next up is the 1:40 and it is the Grade 1 Celebration Chase over 2 miles.
I think GREANATEEN (5/2) can land this contest. He won this race last year by 12l and beat Altior to win it in 2021. This is his track and he is obviously proven at the time of year. The race is coming quick enough for Jonbon and Greanateen skipped Aintree after a third placed effort in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham. I think he can land this race for a third consecutive year.
2:15 Sandown
The 2:15 contest is the Gold Cup Handicap Chase over the extended 3m4f.
It’s ENRILLO (8/1) EW for me here on a day I expect to be all about Paul Nicholls. He was first pace the post in this contest in 2021 before being demoted to third in the stewards room. That was off 143 and he’s off 137 today. Trainer Paul Nicholls believes this is the best he’s had him since that day and back on his preferred better ground, I think he looks set to run a big race.
2:50 Sandown
The Oaksey Chase comes up at 2:50, a Grade 2 chase over the extended 2m6f trip.
I’d be taken Hewick on as it looked a tired fall to me at Cheltenham and the stable are not firing by any stretch of one’s imagination. The one for me is SOLO (7/2) NAP again for that duo of Harry Cobden and Paul Nicholls. He was very impressive after a wind operation last time out jumping like a stag out in front. That form reads well with Datsalrightgino who was second winning a Grade 2 last week. The quick ground will suit and on his second run after a wind operation, I’d expect another bold bid.
3:05 Leicester
We head to Leicester for one race on the flat, it is the King Richard III Cup Handicap over the mile.
I’d take a punt on rank outsider DASHING ROGER (14/1) EW
3:25 Sandown
The final race on ITV from Sandown is the Josh Glifford Novices Handicap Chase over 2m4f.
I’d land on HARPERS BROOK (9/2) EW here for the Ben Pauling stable. He’ll be relishing this return to a quick surface as all his best form is on a quick surface. He was running a huge race from the front in the Ultima at Cheltenham before his stamina gave in proven he was a blatant non-stayer. This drop back to 2m4f looks ideal and if he can get into a similar jumping rhythm out in front again, I’d expect him to go close.
3:45 Haydock
The final race on ITV comes from Haydock and it is a competitive handicap over 7f.
I like BOARDMAN (6/1) EW here. A winner over this course and distance, he looks solid here if the rain stays away. He has been dropped a 1lb to a mark of 98 for a mid-division finish in the Lincoln. The straight mile on heavy ground wouldn’t have been what he wants, a turning 7f on better ground like today is his cup of tea and he’ll do for me.
