ITV Racing Tips from Today’s Meetings at Newbury and Newmarket
1:50 Newbury
The opener on ITV is the Group 3 Aston Park Stakes over 1m4f.
I expect DESERT HERO (10/11) NB to land this. The Royal Ascot winner last season made a highly encouraging return to action finishing a good second in a Group 3 over 1m2f at Sandown. He was entitled to come on for that and the return to the 1m4f will bring out further improvement. He’s shown with that effort that he looks to have trained on from his 3 year-old campaign. He brings a strong level of form to the table for a yard that appears in fine form in William Haggas.
2:05 Newmarket
The first of three live races from Newmarket is the 2:05 which is a 7f handicap restricted to 3 year-olds.
It’s SO LOGICAL (5/1) for me here. The 3 year-old hails from the Gosden stable and was a 7 length winning of a maiden when we last seen him at Newcastle quickening clear and showing a decent turn of foot. That wasn’t the strongest of races by any stretch of the imagination but things seem to click for the selection who had ran green on previous runs. A mark of 77 looks generous and you’d expect further improvement to come now he enters handicaps.
2:25 Newbury
It’s back to Newbury for the 2:25, the Carnavon Stakez, a listed contest over 6f.
I like ADAAY IN DEVON (7/1) in this race. He’s been a model of consistent this season stepping up for his reappearance effort to win back-to-back starts at Bath over 5f including a race at this level. He then went into 6f at Ascot last time out and ran a cracker to finish second at Group 3 level. He’s a tough hardy sort with plenty of experience and I’d expect him to go very close back in listed class.
2:40 Newmarket
The 2:40 from Newmarket is another 7f handicap, this time for the 4 year-olds and above.
I like DIVINE LIBRA (9/2) in this who was a good winner at Chester when we last seen him over this trip. He was much the best in that handicap that day and he done well to win by over 2 lengths given he was wide throughout round that tight turning track. He’s up 7lb but I don’t think that’ll be enough to stop him going in again. He’s a strong stayer over this trip so the stiff finish will suit him well. The Charles Hill stable have also hit form now too which is an obvious plus and he can have another winner here.
3:00 Newbury
The 3:00 from Newbury is the competitive London Gold Cup, a handicap over 1m2f.
It is GOODWOOD ODYSSEY (11/2) NAP I like in this. It was hard not to be impressed with his victory last time out at Sandown. He was held up off the pace and was checked several times when trying to make his run. When he did get out, he displayed a fine turn of foot to land the competitive handicap pretty decisively given the circumstances. Hes on a serious upward curve and is totally unexposed given this is just his fourth career start. I think he can defy the 7lb rise for that win and can go in again off this mark of 90.
3:15 Newmarket
The final race from Newmarket is another handicap, this time over the 1m distance.
It’s HES A GENTLEMAN (12/1) EW I’ve landed on here. Hopefully, he will have been given a nice form boost by Divine Libra in the previous race as he followed him home when we last seen him at Chester two weeks ago. That was a fine run and he’s been kept off the same mark of 78 for this which looks a little generous from the handicapper given the winner went up 7lb. He’s really consistent and has only finished outside the first four on one occasion in his last 11 starts. That was on soft ground so he had excuses and back under ideal conditions here, he’s a solid each-way selection.
3:35 Newbury
The feature race ends proceedings on ITV, the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes over the mile.
It is CHARYN (13/2) for me here who comes into this in both peak fitness and peak form. Two starts this season have resulted in two successful victories. The first of those was a listed victory at Doncaster before stepping up to Group 2 level at Sandown quickening clear of the field. He looks to improved a lot this season and his chief market rivals have not had the benefit of a run. He may not be the best miler further down the line this season but I get the impression this could well be his big day.
