ITV Racing Tips: Eight live races from Musselburgh & Pontefract on Sunday
In a break from the norm, ITV Racing cameras are at Musselburgh for all seven races on the ‘twilight’ card on Sunday, plus the Pomfret Stakes from Pontefract.
The so-called ‘Sky Bet Sunday Series’ looks an exciting initiative and we have a selection in all eight televised races.
Musselburgh
3:55 Sky Bet Sunday Series Newcomers’ EBF Maiden Stakes
As the race title suggests, none of these has previously been seen in public. However, Bryan Smart’s filly Drawdown is by one winner of the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, Profitable, out of a mare by another, Choisir, so may be speedy enough to win at the first time of asking.
Selection: Drawdown (9/2 with William Hill)
4:20 Sky Bet Sunday Series Apprentice Training Series Handicap
Six Strings proved no match for Fairmac on his first attempt over 1 mile 2 furlongs at Ayr earlier this month, but had previously been in decent form over a mile and should benefit from dropping back in distance slightly. He is sneaking up the weights without winning, but his Redcar form three starts back makes good reading and his jockey, Oisin McSweeney, has been among the winners of late.
Selection: Six Strings (5/1 with bet365)
4:45 Sky Bet Sunday Series Nursery Handicap
Firebomb, who has been knocking on the door in maiden races over the minimum trip, looks to have \ decent chance of breaking his duck. His second to subsequent Norfolk Stakes winner Perfect Power at Hamilton in June was highly creditable and he deserves a change of luck.
Selection: Firebomb (7/1 with William Hill)
5:15 Sky Bet Sunday Series Sprint Handicap
The prolific Gunnerside, who is 6-9 this season, steps up in class off a 6lb higher mark, but looked better than ever when winning at Carlisle earlier this month and remains one to consider. However, preference on this occasion is for Good Luck Fox, who has been raised 7lb for winning a similar race over course and distance last month, but did so comfortably.
Selection: Good Luck Fox (17/2 with bet365)
5:45 Sky Bet Sunday Series Fillies’ Handicap
Marco Botti’s 3-year-old Rising Star makes the trek from Newmarket for the second time in three starts this season and the hint may be worth taking. The daughter of Fast Company wasn’t beaten far in a better race, albeit over 7 furlongs, at Newmarket last time and can race here off an identical handicap mark. Over this sharp mile, she could take some beating.
Selection: Rising Star (6/4 with William Hill)
6:15 Sky Bet Sunday Series Handicap
Birkby trainer Grant Tuer, who saddles Six Strings earlier in the afternoon, could be visiting the winners’ enclosure again with Lion Tower, for whom the drop back to 7 furlongs looks ideal. The Exceed And Excel gelding has won a couple of times over a mile, but his recent running suggests that a less arduous test of stamina would suit him better still.
Selection: Lion Tower (11/2 with bet365)
6:40 Sky Bet Sunday Series Stayers Handicap
Plenty of recent winning form on offer, but none more convincing than that of Wise Eagle, who is 2-2 over 1 mile 6 furlongs, fully effective on the prevailing good going and still appears feasibly handicapped. He is 4lb higher in the weights than winning a small race over course and distance last month, but has made steady progress this season, running up a hat-trick in March and April and may not have finished improving just yet.
Selection: Wise Eagle (4/1 with William Hill)
Pontefract
4:10 Sky Bet Go-Racing-In-Yorkshire Summer Festival Pomfret Stakes
Three-time Group 3 winner Regal Reality was far from disgraced in the Group 2 Betfred Summer Mile at Ascot earlier this month, especially as he lost his right-hind shoe, and is one to take seriously now that he drops in class. However, the Royal Hunt Cup form received a timely boost at Newbury last Saturday, so Brunch, who finished a never-nearer seventh at Ascot, looks to have bright prospects; the stiff uphill finish should play to his strengths.
Selection: Brunch (9/2 with William Hill)
