ITV Racing Tips – Preview and Tips from Newbury, Newmarket and Ripon this Weekend
ITV Racing takes us to Newbury and Newmarket this Saturday, as well as two races from Ripon where there has been some controversy after there wasn’t enough entries for one of the races.
Henry has been through the cards for the live ITV racing and picked out his best for each race and the action gets underway at 1.20pm from Newbury. There are 9 races in total to get through.
1.20 Newbury
The first race is a 8 runner handicap over 1m2f.
It’s JOHN THE BAPTIST (20/1) EW for me. A winner on debut at Curragh in a race that worked out very well. He hasn’t done anything since but continued to just fly down the handicap. Dropped a further 5lb for his last effort at Goodwood to a mark of 77 I’ll chance him at a big price here. Trainer Michael Appleby is in rude form at the moment and the jockey is value for his 3lb claim.
1.40 Ripon
A conditional stakes race over 5f replaces the consolation race for the St Wilfrid due to the lack of entries.
Not a great race, I’ll go with NEW DEFINITION (5/2) here. He’d be clear fav if you ignored his last race at Musselburgh and he’s shown the best form to date from this lot. James Tate is the most established trainer in the line-up and hopefully he can get the selection back on track today.
1.55 Newbury
Next up is the Denford Stakes, a listed contest for 2 year-olds over 7f.
I’ll go with CANDLE OF HOPE (4/1) here for the Haggas team. Unbeaten in two starts, I always find it encouraging when a Haggas horse wins first time out as they quite often improve for that first outing. She won as easy as you’d like last time out at Thirsk albeit in a weak race but I think she can continue on the upward curve and at least give the odds-on jolly a race here.
2.10 Newmarket
The first race from Newmarket on ITV is a five runner fillies handicap over 1m6f.
I’d expect ATLANTIS (6/5) to prove tough to beat here. She took a nice step forward to win at Doncaster last time out and I think she’ll appreciate this extra 2f. She’s ok the upgrade and I like the improving 3 year-old against their elders at this time of the year.
2.30 Newbury
It’s Group 3 action next from Newbury. Only five runners go to post for this one over 1m6f.
I think OUTBOX (6/1) NAP can make all here. On his best form, he is arguably the best horse in this race. He’s just very inconsistent. However, he’s often seen to beat affect when getting a solo out in front and he looks the only pace angle in this small field. I’m hopeful Hollie Doyle can set nice fractions from the front and prove tough to pass.
2.50 Ripon
The best betting race of the is the 2:50 from Ripon, the Great St Wilfrid Handicap over the 6f trip.
I think MISTER GREY (9/1) EW will make all here too. An impressive winner at Chelmsford last time out, he stayed on strongly to win a decent enough race there on paper. He’s drawn in stall 15 which looks the place to be on recent renewals and conditions will be ideal. The jockey takes off 3lb and he is on the improve.
3.00 Newbury
A competitive handicap comes up at 3:00 but unfortunately only 7 go to post for this.
Another horse I like to go from the front is ABLE KANE (12/1) EW here. Again, I can’t see any other pace angle and if you ignore Able Kane’s last effort where everything went wrong, he’s been in decent form all season. The trainer and jockey teamed up to land the feature here yesterday and this horse appears the value in this to me.
3.18 Newmarket
Next up we have the Grey Horse handicap over 6f.
I’ll go with COME ON GIRL (4/1) here. The improving 3 year-old getting all sorts of weight from her elders again. A good winner last time out at Lingfield to make it two wins from her last three runs. As mentioned earlier, the Michael Appleby yard are in flying form and I expect a bold bid here.
3.35 Newbury
The feature is the finale, the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes ran over 7f.
It’s POGO (7/2) NB for me here. Clearly thriving this season, he’s ran cracking races from the front. He ran a cracker from the front in the Lennon Stakes at Goodwood last time out not being far in third and won his previous two starts well. On a day I hope front runners have a great day, hopefully he can round it off with another winner here.
