2:00 York
The first race on ITV comes from York and it’s a 0-105 handicap over the mile.
The one for me is ARAMAIC (6/1) here. A previous winner here at York for a stable that thrives here, he ran a really encouraging race from the front last time out finishing third at Sandown. I think that’s a race that will work out well and off just a 1lb higher mark, he’ll do for me in the opener.
2:20 Ascot
We have one race live from Ascot and it is the 2:20 race, the Group 2 Summer Mile for horses aged 4 and older.
The one I like is ALDAARY (9/4) here. A winner of two decent handicaps here at Ascot in October 2021, he then went on to win at listed level at Haydock in May 2022. He’s obviously a fragile horse who doesn’t see much racing but when he gets to the track he’s shown he’s a very good horse. He ran a decent comeback race at Newmarket two weeks ago and he should definitely come on for that. He now returns to Ascot and he’ll thrive off any rain that falls. The softer the better.
2:35 York
We head back to York next for listed action, the City Walls Stakes over the minimum 5f trip.
It’s SILKY WILKIE (7/2) that I like. A fast 5f is what he relishes and he’ll get that around York here He was very unlucky when finishing a close second in the Epsom Dash which was certainly a step back in the right direction after a couple of poor efforts. This is his level and he go from the front which isn’t a bad place to be here at York a lot of the time. The Karl Burke stable can’t do a lot wrong at present and I think they could have another winner to add to that fine current strike rate here.
2:50 Newmarket
The first race on ITV from Newmarket comes up at 2:50 and it is another mile handicap.
I like ROYAL DUBAI (11/2) in here for the Marco Botti yard. He had two runs over in Meydan over the winter including a victory on the first of those. However, he’s shown a decent level of form in two starts back in the UK. He won his first start at Chelmsford before going a close second at Chester last time staying on strongly but not quite reaching the leader. This stiff finish will suit better based on that run.
3:10 York
The 3:10 is the John Smith’s Cup Handicap, a really competitive handicap over the extended 1m2f distance.
It’s MAJESTIC (14/1) EW for me in this. He also ran in the same race as Aramaic at Sandown last time out and as mentioned earlier, I do think it’ll work out well. Majestic was out wide and came from off the pace that day doing very well to finish fourth in the end. He remains off the same mark of 92 and on a going day, he’s capable of defying that mark based on what we’ve seen. He’s versatile ground wise and the Jack Channon yard have been operating at a 29% strike rate over the last two weeks which is really encouraging. He’s very rarely out the frame and always seems to give his running, therefore he has to be considered to at least hit the frame in an open contest.
3:25 Newmarket
The 3:25 from Newmarket is the Superlative Stake, a Group 2 race over 7f.
It’s CITY OF TROY (11/10) NB for me here. Godolphin continue to be in a little bit of a slump and they had a 2 year-old well thought of turned over here at 1/6 yesterday. City Of Troy on the other hand hails from a yard that continue in fine form in Aiden O’Brien. The horse was a really impressive winner on debut at the Curragh powering clear to win going away. He looked like a proper professional 2 year-old. The yards always improve for their first outing and I think he’ll improve past the rest here.
3:45 York
The 3:45 from York is the Silver Cup Stakes, a Group 3 race over 1m6f.
I’d be surprised if HAMISH (8/13) doesn’t win this. He’s the best horse in the race and the rain that’s fell recently will only aid his chances. He’s 7 years of age now but he has shown no signs of regressing. He was a good winner at Chester when last seen at May in the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes. This race looks weaker than that so connections will be very disappointed if he doesn’t go in again here before focus turns to bigger targets in the second half of the season.
4:00 Newmarket
The 4:00 race is the always competitive Bunbury Cup, a handicap over the 7f distance.
It’s STREETS OF GOLD (15/2) EW for me in this. A really good 2 year-old last season, he returned back to a decent level of form when finishing a good third at Group 3 level in the Jersey Stakes last time out at Royal Ascot. He’s arguably open to most improvement in this line-up being the only 4 year-old and if he can kick on again from that career best effort, he has to go well of this mark back in a handicap. Stall 10 looks a good spot to be with plenty of pace to aim at from there.
4:35 Newmarket
The feature ends proceedings and it is the Group 1 July Cup Stakes over 6f.
I like AZURE BLUE (7/2) NAP here for the Michael Dods team. He’s a master with sprinters and this horse has a really progressive profile and comes here fresh after missing Royal Ascot. She has won both starts this year, firstly here at Newmarket before beating Highfield Princess at York in May. That makes it four wins on the bounce and I think she has the potential to make it five on a track she relishes.
