1:08 Aintree
The first race comes from Aintree and it is a Pertemps qualifier over the 3m trip. There has been plenty of rain through the week in the Aintree area but sunshine to end the week has helped dry the ground out. However, it’s still likely to be a real test.
My selection is SOUTH TERRACE (11/2). A real consistent sort who’s improving well and gets a lovely racing weight of 10’4 here. He won well last time out staying on strongly and should have no issues with this type of test. Sam Twiston Davies takes the ride and he’s in fine form at the moment.
1:25 Doncaster
The 1:25 race from Doncaster is a trappy 7f handicap.
The one I like is FRESH NB (5/1) for the James Fanshawe team. I really think he deserves to land a decent pot and today could be that day. He’s been dropped a pound since his last run which was a solid third place finish here at Doncaster. Soft ground will hold no fears and the big field strong pace suits him well.
1:50 Wincanton
It’s off to Wincanton next for the Grade 2 Rising Star Novices Chase over the intermediate trip of 2m4f.
I’d expect BRAVEMANSGAME (NR) to win this and win it well. He was spectacular at Newton Abbot on chase debut and looked a real star. He should be beating this lot on all known form if he jumps as well as he did last time out.
2:05 Doncaster
The Wentworth Stakes is next up at Doncaster, another trappy affair, this time over the 6f distance.
My selection in this is TARHIB (15/2) for the Haggas team. A real unexposed 3 year-old who falls into the could be anything category. She was second on debut before she stepped up on that to win his next two starts well. She didn’t beat much but it’s interesting that Haggas sends her here now into much deeper waters. She gets a nice weight for age allowance and is a decent price.
2:15 Aintree
The 2:15 race from Aintree is the Grand Sefton Handicap Chase. A great spectacle as they take on the National fences.
I like TIME TO GET UP (13/2) in this. Jonjo O’Neill is another trainer in fine fettle at the moment and this lad could be a serious National horse throughout the season. He won the Midlands Grand National last time out to end last season staying on strongly and looking like a real classy stayer. Another summer on his back will have done him no harm and Tom Scoudamore has had plenty of experience round these unique fences.
2:25 Wincanton
The 2:25 from Wincanton is a wide open mares handicap hurdle with plenty of unexposed sorts lining up.
The one I like is ROSE OF ARCADIA NAP (4/1). She has always been a talking horse within the Tizzard yard and I’m hoping she can bring that to the track today. She has won over course and distance two starts ago and I just think she’ll eventually prove to be a lot better than her current mark. Tizzard has started the season well with plenty of decent prizes landed and I think he can have another one here.
2:40 Doncaster
The 2:40 from Doncaster is the November Handicap over the 1m4f distance.
The one for me here is CALLING THE WIND (9/1). A strong traveller who will be a match made in heaven for today’s jockey Jamie Spencer. He was a good third last time out in the Cesarewitch. I don’t think he quite got home there after travelling well where as today’s trip will certainly prove to be no problem. He’s a nice each way price in a wide open race.
3:00 Wincanton
The 3:00 race from Wincanton is another wide open handicap, this time over the chase course over 3m1f.
The one I’ve landed on is HIGHLAND HUNTER (NR). Hopefully, Time To Get Up will have provided a nice form boost earlier for this lad. He is a consistent sort who always seems to run his race. Jumping is his asset and I’m hoping he can get several of these in trouble as he likes to go from the front. Another horse who I think can improve this season and is more than capable of landing a pot like this one.
3:35 Wincanton
The Elite Hurdle is last up at Wincanton, a Grade 2 contest over 2m.
My selection here is BELFAST BANTER (8/1). I just think he’s the value in the race. He is a Cheltenham Festival and Grade 1 Aintree winner this year and this strong traveller is going to be well suited by the strong pace you’d expect Goshen to set. He is coming off the back of a couple of disappointing runs including a fall last time out but trainer Peter Fahey seems very happy with him and I think he should be a little closer to the front two in the market.
