1:50 Goodwood
The opener on Day 2 is a class 2 handicap for the 3 year-olds over 1m4f.
The one I like is WESTERTON (6/1). A really consistent genuine sort this season who ran a cracker last time out finishing a good third at Newmarket in a decent handicap. The overnight rain will suit as he’s proven with cut in the ground as he finished second at both Doncaster and Ascot on soft earlier this year. That can’t be said by many if his rivals in this line-up either. He is off just a 1lb higher mark here as he was last time out at Newmarket and with Ryan Moore in the saddle I’d expect a bold bid.
2:25 Goodwood
The 2:25 race is next and it is the Oak Tree Stakes, a Group 3 for the elders over the 7f trip.
It’s FAST RESPONSE (9/2) for me here who relishes cut in the ground. She’s well suited by the 7f trip should and she should have won over it last time out at Chester. She was out wide from a high draw and just failed to reel the winner in despite trouble in running. From stall 1 here, she’ll be able to get a nice handy position which suits her well. She’ll be tough to pass and looks a solid selection in this race given the combination of this track, trip and ground looks perfect.
3:00 Goodwood
The 3:00 contest is the Molecombe Stakes, a Group 3 race for the 2 year-olds over the minimum 5 furlongs.
It’s BIG EVS (5/2) for me in this. He was a decent winner at Royal Ascot when landing the Windsor Castle pretty easily. He was well backed after an encouraging debut at Redcar that day suggesting connections were hopeful he’d improve a lot for that debut effort. He shown he was all speed when powering clear to win by 3L leading pretty much from the gates. This track should suit him even better as he will be quickly away and won’t be hanging about. Goodwood is a speed favouring track.
3:35 Goodwood
The feature on Day 2 comes up at 3:35, the Group 1 Sussex Stakes over the mile.
Paddington will be tough to beat but I’ll chance ALDAARY (14/1) here. He’ll certainly be well suited to the cut in the ground and you’d hope he continue to improve for each outing this season. He was a good second last time out at Ascot on ground quicker than ideal. This could become tactical with a small select field. Paddington has had a hard enough season too and Inspiral won’t appreciate any cut in the ground.
