1:15 Leopardstown
A fantastic start to the ITV coverage as the top staying hurdlers are in action in the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle over 3m. Gordon Elliot has the front two in the market in Sire Du Berlais and Fury Road and the pair both deserve huge respect. Ronald Pump finished a good second behind Honeysuckle last time out and this step back up in trip is bound to suit.
It’s hard to split them all but I’m going to edge with FURY ROAD here. Fury Road was third in the Albert Bartlett back in March finishing a place a head of Thyme Hill who has done a lot for that piece of form. He made a pleasing return to action when winning at Punchestown and there’s significant scope for further improvement.
1:30 Catterick
The 1:30 race from Catterick is a handicap hurdle over 2m in which only 7 runners go to post.
The one I like here is MISS HERITAGE NB. Miss Heritage was unlucky in a Class 2 event last time out staying on well to finish second at Ludlow and a 4lb rise might not stop him here back in a Class 3 affair. He’ll relish the soft ground and Bryony Frost can have another ITV winner for punters.
1:50 Leopardstown
The 1:50 race is possibly the most competitive and wide-open betting event of the day, a handicap hurdle over 2m4f with the market leader opening up at 6/1.
The one I like is ASHQAR EW. Ashqar ran on the flat last time when finishing sixth at Dundalk at 80/1. That was a solid effort and I think that was to blow away the cobwebs ahead of his bid in this contest. He’s a consistent sort and will give punters a good run for their money at a lovely each way price. Not the strongest selection of the day for obvious reasons but he can make the frame.
2:25 Leopardstown
Next up is the big one, the Grade 1 Savills Chase over 3m and we have a fantastic renewal. Minello Indo heads the market after winning well twice to start his season. He was an unlucky 2nd at Cheltenham in the RSA back in March and he’s bound to go close.
I’m going to go for DELTA WORK NAP here though. He always seems to run his best races of the season around Christmas and I think we will see the same again here. He won this race last year with a similar preparation. He always need his comeback run and it was the same story this year where he finished fifth at Punchestown behind The Storyteller. That will have brought him on a lot and Jack Kennedy has a great record when on board. Delta Work is still on 7 years-old and I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet.
2:45 Limerick
The 2:45 race from Limerick is a Handicap Chase over 2m4f and the ground is certainly going to be on the heavy side.
The one I like here is GOOSE MAN EW. Goose Man is a horse I’ve always thought a lot of and he may well need this comeback run but I just can’t ignore him at a double figured price. He’s obviously been off the track along time but trainer Tom Taafe has been extra patient and he now returns in an intriguing affair. He won a couple of decent chase races before his injury and I’m hoping the ability is still there because he has a lot of talent.
3:00 Leopardstown
The finale for ITV’s coverage is an intriguing Beginners Chase over 2m5f.
I expect THE BIG GETAWAY to win this and win it well. He was disappointing on his chase debut when finishing third but I expect significant improvement with that run now under his belt. Trainer Willie Mullins is in great form of late and his third placed effort in the Ballymore Novices Hurdle back in March is really strong form.
