Newmarket, Ascot and Redcar Tips for ITV Racing on Saturday 7th October

1:30 Newmarket
The first race on ITV is a fillies handicap at Newmarket over the 1m2f trip.
The one I like is TOTNES (6/1). A really consistent hardy 3 year-old from the Andrew Balding stable, she is possibly one of the more exposed in this race but she certainly brings the best level of form to the table with her fine second behind Balance Play last time out. She stayed on well that day suggesting the stiff finish of Newmarket will suit her well. Prior to that fine second placed effort she won at Chelmsford and Chepstow suggesting she’s really on a roll at the moment. I think she’s overpriced here given what we know.
1:50 Ascot
The first of four races from Ascot on ITV is the Blue Eagle Rous Stakes, a listed contest for the sprinters over the Ascot stiff 5f.
It’s KORKER (4/1) NB for me here. A horse that has more ability than his results suggest, he finally got his head in front when coming from off the pace to win well at Beverley last time out. I’m hoping that gives him some confidence and this stiff finish at Ascot will surely suit his running style well. He likes to be held up off the pace and does all his best work late on. I think he’ll go close.
2:05 Newmarket
The 2:05 from HQ is a competitive 2 year-old sprint Auction Stakes with 22 runners set to go to post.
It’s WOODHAY WONDER (9/2) for me here. The selection has had four career starts, improving from his debut effort at Kempton to win 2 out of his next 3 starts. He was an impressive winner here at Newmarket last time out sitting just off the pace before showing a decent turn of foot to win going again. He proved he’ll have no problems handling the dip based on that evidence. He likes to sit just off the pace so I’m hoping he’ll be able to sit just off the hit favourite and come with a winning run late on.
2:25 Ascot
It’s back to Ascot for the 2:25 and it is the Cumberland Lodge Stakes, a Group 3 over 1m4f.
It’s AL QAREEM(5/1) for me here. He put two poor efforts in Saudi and Meydan earlier in the year behind him when making a successful winning comeback at Chester last time out. It looked like that break done him good as he travelled enthusiastically throughout and beat a really solid yardstick in Bluestocking who was second in a Group 1 Irish Oaks earlier in the year. Being his first run after a break, I’d hope he would come on for that run and with further improvement, he’d have to bang there in this.
2:45 Redcar
We head to Redcar for one race and it is the listed contest for 2 year-olds known as the Two Year Old Trophy. It is a 6 furlong race with 11 runners scheduled to run.
The one for me here is ACTION POINT (10/1) EW. The favourite will take a lot of beaten here Dragon Leader but the price is terrible. Action Point has been a solid performer this season winning a listed race at Newbury three starts back before finishing 4th on his next two starts at Group 2 level. This is therefore a drop in class and a draw of stall 4 looks ideal as the track often favours the low stalls. He’s the likely pace angle and hopefully he can grab the rail and prove a tough nut to crack.
3:00 Ascot
The 3:00 race from Ascot is the Bengough Stakes, a Group 3 over 6f.
I like GARRUS(15/2) here whose draw in stall 10 looks ideal based on the bias we seen at Ascot on Friday. He’s a really good operator on his day and this is a decent class drop based on his recent results. He’s been 2nd in two Group 2’s in France before finishing 8th of 8 in the Group 1 Betfair Sprint Cup last time out. He finished last there but was only beaten 4 lengths so it’s not bad as it looks on paper. I think he’s got ideal conditions today from an ideal draw and if he runs his race, he’ll go close at this level.
3:15 Newmarket
The 3:15 is the feature of the day, the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes over the mile for the fillies and mares.
I’ll chance HEREDIA (9/1) EW here at the prices. She’s always looked like she could be a Group 1 horse on a going day and she comes here in great form with victories on her last two starts. Albeit the first was a listed race at Haydock first before winning a Group 3 at Sandown last time out. She won that Sandown race a lot easier than the winning margin suggests however. This race will suit her as Random Harvest will lead them along and set a decent enough pace. Heredia will sit off the pace and if he hopeful she can stay on to hit the places at least.
3:35 Ascot
The final race on ITV is the Howden Challenge Cup, a typical wide-open Ascot handicap over 7 furlongs.
It’s FRESH (13/2) NAP for me here. He also has an ideal draw in stall 18 here and he’s been knocking on the door in recent starts suggesting his turn is near. He was 5th two starts ago in a deep handicap at York before a very unlucky 6th placed effort last time out at the Curragh where he just couldn’t get a run. He has a great record on this track and this race is right up his street. I can’t see him not winning truth be told.
