Newmarket, Chester and Haydock Tips for Saturday 30th September

Newmarket racecourse

1:50 Newmarket

The first race from Newmarket is the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes for the 2 year-old colts over the mile.

It’s GHOSTWRITER (5/1) for me here. A winner on both his career starts to date, firstly here at Newmarket before winning from the front last time at Ascot. He shown he improved from that first outing and still looked a little green suggesting further improvement is inevitable. He’s proven himself there on a quick surface and similar tactics could well be beneficial here today. The mile will hold no fears.

2:05 Chester

We head to the Roudee for one race and it’s a handicap for the stayers over the extended 2 and a quarter miles.

Take the class edge off top weight here in TASHKHAN (6/1) NB would be my advice. This is the weakest race he’ll have ran in for a long time and with conditions on the soft side at Chester; that’ll suit him down to the ground. He wasn’t disgraced in the Ebor last time out finishing mid-division and if he’s anywhere near his best form, he will win this.

2:25 Newmarket – NON-RUNNER

The next race from Newmarket is the first Group 1, the Cheveley Park Stakes for the 2 year-old fillies over the 6f trip.

It’s hard to get away from RELIEF RALLY (2/1) NAP who should arguably be unbeaten this season. A winner on four of her five career starts, finishing an unlucky second on her only other start at Royal Ascot. She looked a proper speedy 2 year-old and looks as professional and straightforward as they come. She’s proven on the ground winning on it at York last time out and if she runs her race, she will be a tough nut to crack.

2:40 Haydock

We have one race from Haydock where is a trappy 5f sprint handicap with 9 runners scheduled to run.

It’s SILKY WILKIE (5/1) for me here. Another that’s been operating a higher level recently and will appreciate the drop to a weakfish looking handicap. He has the presence of Brandon Wilkie in the saddle who is a very valuable 7lb claim alongside a great record for the Karl Burke stable. He ran well behind Rogue Lightning last time out who aims for Group 1 success on Sunday so a similar effort has to go close back in a handicap against exposed sorts.

3:00 Newmarket

The second Group 1 comes up at 3:00 and it is the Middle Park Stakes, again over 6f but this time for the colts.

It’s JASOUR (15/2) EW for me here. He improved from his debut runner-up effort at Salisbury to win well at Nottingham on his second start. He then stepped up to 6f for the Group 2 July Stakes here at Newmarket where he beat the re-opposing Lake Forest by 2 lengths. That was impressive and I’m happy to put a line through his effort behind some of these in the Prix Morny last time out as the ground was very soft. He’ll relish returning to the faster surface here and some of the market leaders need to prove they’re as effective on it. He’s a solid each-way selection under ideal conditions.

3:40 Newmarket

The final race is the always competitive 2023 renewal of the Cambridgeshire Handicap with 34 runners set to go to post.

It’s BOPEDRO (18/1) EW for me here. Firstly, he’s drawn high which is the place to be going on previous renewals of this contest. He comes from a stable with a good record in handicaps and are flying at the moment in David O’Meara. He was a good winner here at Newmarket two starts back on similar quick ground and his run last time at Leopardstown was incredibly unlucky getting no run throughout. He’s only 4lb higher than his victory here in August and I think he’s going to go really close. Frame claims looks obvious.
