Patrick Mullins’ Cheltenham Festival 2021 Tips – “If he runs, he has to be a very good each-way bet”
With the Cheltenham Festival creeping ever closer, the preview nights, blogs and videos are starting to come in and Patrick Mullins has been speaking about some of his tips for the Festival.
He thinks that the Mullins yards string “looks like the strongest team going into Cheltenham” that they’ve had, with the likes of Appreciate It, Chacun Pour Soi, Al Boum Photo and Monkfish all strong favourites and very well fancied.
In the first episode of the ‘In The Know’ series from Racing Post and Coral, jockey Patrick Mullins gives his betting tips for the Champion Hurdle, Stayers Hurdle and Mares’ Novices Chase.
There are also mentions for some of the other Willie Mullins trained fancies such as Monkfish and Al Boum Photo.
Champion Hurdle – Honeysuckle
Mullins will be riding Sharjah in this race and he says that last year, everything went perfect for Epatante. This year he will look to have a slight change of tactic on Sharjah, wanting to be closer to the pace and a small field will help this. It was very difficult to come from a long way back last year and that would be the case again with Honeysuckle going forward.
On Honeysuckle, he thinks she is the one to beat and looks a lot better than last season. She seems very professional and a different horse.
Saint Roi has been disappointing this season but he could bounce back and he will be riding Sharjah for a place, given that Honeysuckle is his selection.
HONEYSUCKLE – 2/1 with Coral.
Stayers Hurdle – Paisley Park & Bachasson EW
At a price, Mullins is keen on the chances of Bachasson each-way here. He was running on well in the Coral Cup 12 months ago and he thinks his performance is better than the never nearer 6th place finish he managed. His form has been strong this season and he goes to the Stayers Hurdle with a nice chance.
“If he runs, he has to be a very good each-way bet”
Mullins goes on to say this is the most competitive of the Championship races at the 2021 Festival but falls on the side of Paisley Park if he had to choose between him and Thyme Hill at the head of the betting. If Paisley Park is back to his best form he will be very hard to beat.
PAISLEY PARK – 11/4 with Coral.
BACHASSON (each-way) – 33/1 with Coral.
Mares Chase – Shattered Love & SALSARETTA EW
The Mullins yard are notoriously good at producing very good Mares and with another strong hand going to Cheltenham this season, they have plenty of chances. Partick starts by talking about Elimay, who is the current favourites for the Mares Chase. “She ran very well behind Allaho”, which is good form in anybody’s book.
Colreevy is a Grade 1 winner so she will have to carry a penalty in this Grade 2 contest and that would concern Mullins but she is the ideal chasing type – a big horse.
Shattered Love is given a strong mention and could be the one that Mullins falls on.
Finally, Salsaretta is also spoken about at 16/1. She has been very difficult to train this year but was very good last year and could bounce back to form around Cheltenham. Her form last spring was very good and she’s probably worth an each-way bet.
Shattered Love – 6/1 with Coral.
Salsaretta – 16/1 with Coral.
Other Partick Mullins Tips
Elsewhere, Mullins says that Monkfish has no real weakness and he stayed well in the Albert Bartlett last year, so there is no real reason to think he won’t stay this time around. He keeps on improving and is a very physical horse now. His results against Latest Exhibition tells you he is just getting better with every run and he’s a better chaser than a hurdler.
MONKFISH – 8/11 with Coral.
Asterion Forlonge might miss the Festival and go to the 2m5 chase at Fairyhouse.
Energumene needs to take on Shishkin in the Arkle and Patrick say’s he is a relentless front runner. He is very fluent over his jumps as he showed at Leopardstown.
“He’s a hugely exciting horse and I don’t think we’ve got to the bottom of him just yet”.
ENERGUMENE – 2/1 with Coral.
