2:30 Golden Mind E/W – 10/1
The final 2 year-old race of the week is the Chesham Stakes, a listed contest over 7f.
The one I like is GOLDEN MIND (10/1) EW for the Richard Fahey stable. He’s had a winner of a 2 year-old race here the last two years and I think he may well make it a third here. 5f was too sharp for her on debut at Hamilton but he stayed on well to finish third learning from the experience. He then went to Leicester on his second start stepping up to 6f and he stayed on strongly to get up close to home. I think he’ll again improve for that experience and there is no doubt this 7f trip will be another massive positive. He is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Perfect Power who won the Norfolk Stakes at the age of 2, before landing the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup the following year. That’s no negative.
3:05 Covey WIN – 9/4
A very impressive all the way winner LTO, he clearly has bundles of ability and does look to have improved with every run. He was beaten by Zoology on debut but that rival came with experience and is expected to turn the form around. The Antarctic is interesting upped to 7f and could be a danger if taking to the new distance. But I will keep faith with Dettori and Gosden on this occasion, Covey might not be done improving yet.
3:40 Highfield Princess WIN (NB) – 11/2
I was against her at shorter odds in the King’s Stand when she finished a good 2nd but she is a better price here and I do think she prefers 6f. She will need to have come out of the Kings Stand well but it is a double that has been attempted fairly often in recent years so I’m not that worried. The two horses at the top of the betting are international horses, which have all underperformed this week which in my opinion makes her a good bet.
4:20 Free Wind WIN – 6/5
The 4:20 race is the 1m4f Group 2 Hardwick Stakes.
It’s FREE WIND (11/4) NAP for me here to round off a great week for Dettori. She’s a horse of serious quality and she knows how to win given she’s won her last four starts. She was a good winner last time out over an inadequate 1m2f trip at York and connections were confident she’d come on for it. The second Rogue Millennium has come out and booster that form with a Group 2 win this week himself. Free Wind will enjoy going back up in trip and I like her a lot in this.
5:00 First Folio E/W – 25/1
Orazio is a worthy favourite based on his progression so far this season but both wins have been with cut in the ground so that is a question mark here. Plenty reoppose from last year and I’m going for First Folio, he challenged from the widest position and given the rail bias his race can be upgraded, he comes in off the same mark again and loves quick ground. He’s visored after a poor run as favourite last time and Taylor Fisher takes off a valuable 5lb.
5:35 Knockbrex WIN – 4/1
It cannot get more difficult than a 3yo handicap, plenty of horses early in their handicap lives with improvement likely from many. But Knockbrex has some great form to go on, beaten less than 2 lengths by Queen’s Vase Winner Gregory before a close-up 4th in a handicap in which the other runners have ran well here this week. He has a good race weight and with Dettori on board for Charlie Johnston a big run must be expected
6:10 Run For Oscar WIN – 4/1
Stratum loves it round here and specifically this race, winning it the last twice, but there are question marks as to if he retains ability aged 10. Run For Oscar had a prep run over too short a trip last month and will relish this marathon distance. Dawn Rising had some good form on the flat for Aidan O’Brien before moving to his son to go hurdling. I’m going to stick with the Cesarewitch winner to stamp his stamina on the race.
