2:30 Royal Ascot
The opener on Day 2 of the Royal Meeting is the Queen Mary Stakes, a Group 2 for the 2 year-old fillies over the 6f trip.
It’s FLORA OF BERMUDA (33/1) EW for me here at a decent price. She was 4th on debut at Sandown but the run looked full of promise as she looked in need of the experience. Bred to improve throughout her 2-year-old campaign, she arguably should have won the Hillary Needler last time out at Beverley. She couldn’t get a run and flew home to finish a never nearer second. The winner re-opposes here but the value definitely lies with the selection based on that effort last time out. If she continues to improve as expected, I think this race will suit her well and with Ascot being a wide track, there should be no hard luck stories today.
3:05 Royal Ascot
The 3:05 race is the Kensington Palace Fillies Handicap over the mile and it’s a very competitive affair.
It’s ADELAISE (8/1) EW I like here. She ran a cracker on seasonal reappearance at the Curragh finishing third in a deep handicap. She was unlucky there, not getting a clear run and having to switch out to get a run. She flew home for third that day and off a mark of 86, just 1lb higher than that run last time out, she looks to have a cracking chance. I’m sure this has been the target for a while and stable jockey Mikey Sheehy has opted for Adelaise out of Joseph O’Brien’s three.
3:40 Royal Ascot
It’s Group 2 action for the older fillies at 3:40 with the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes over the mile trip.
I do like JUMBLY (9/4) NB in this. A switch from the Roger Charlton stable to Joseph O’Brien is an upgrade in my opinion and the selection was a very likeable improving sort last season for the previous yard. She was a very good 2-year-old winning three of her four outings and running well in the Rockel Stakes. She ran at a high level throughout last season and produced her best effort on her final outing when winning a Group 3 here at Ascot. Her comeback effort behind Just Beautiful on her first start for the new stable was highly encouraging and market vibes suggest she’d improve for it. Ryan Moore is booked and she’ll be tough to beat in a weak renewal.
4:20 Royal Ascot
The feature on Day 2 is the Group 1 Prince Of Wales Stakes over 1m2f.
It’s MY PROSPERO (7/2) NAP for me here. He was a very close third in the Group 1 St James Palace Stakes over the mile in a race that wouldn’t have suited him given how slow they went. He ran a career best when third again here at Ascot on Champions Day in the Champion Stakes finishing just behind the re-opposing duo of Bay Bridge and Adayar. Being a 4 year-old, My Prospero is arguably open to more improvement than those two this season. He made a really encouraging return to action this season when finishing a staying on 4th in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes last month. That was over a mile and this step back up in trip looks a positive.
5:00 Royal Ascot
One of the most competitive handicaps of the week comes up at 5pm, the Royal Hunt Cup over the mile with 30 runners scheduled to line up.
It’s INTELLOGENT (8/1) EW for me in this. A previous Group 1 winner back in his early days over in France, he ran his best race in the UK in this same race last season when finishing a close second. He’s off 1lb lower today and I like his draw of stall 31 as we’ve seen the high numbers favoured quite often at this meeting throughout the years. He ran his best race for a while when not beaten far behind Bear Force One last time out and hopefully, that has put him spot on for this. I’m hoping he’s returning to form just at the right time.
5:35 Royal Ascot
The 5:35 race is the Group 2 Queens Vase ran over 1m6f.
I expect GREGORY (7/4) will take a lot of beating in this. He’s 2-2 after winning at Haydock on debut before being pitched straight into listed company to win at Goodwood last time out. He still looked raw when winning that which shows he’s a horse with serious potential. If he continues to learn and improve he’ll be tough to beat for his powerful connections. This step up in trip looks sure to suit too.
6:10 Royal Ascot
The finale on Day 2 is the Windsor Castle Stakes, a listed race for the 2-year-olds over the minimum 5f.
It’s BARNWELL BOY (3/1) in this for me. An impressive winner on debut at Goodwood over 6f, he made all and went clear to win by over 4L. He has shown enough pace to suggest this drop to 5f won’t be an issue. The stiff finish will obviously suit given he’s already proven he stays 6f well. Oisin Murphy is a decent jockey booking and from stall 3, I think he’ll bounce out and sit handy and prove a tough nut to crack.
