2:30 Royal Ascot
The opener of the Royal Meeting is the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes over the straight mile.
I’ve landed on DOCKLANDS (16/1) EW here for the shrewd Harry Eustace stable. He’s a really consistent sort who should relish this type of test. He likes to be held up off a decent pace and that’s what he will get here. The straight mile suits him well as proven when bolting up in the Britannia Handicap here last season. He has a fine record over this course and distance full stop with 2 wins and 2 placed efforts from four starts. Hayley Turner rides this straight mile as well as anyone. His comeback run was very pleasing and he just looked in need of it getting chinned close to home. He’ll strip fitter today and conditions look ideal.
3:05 Royal Ascot
The first 2 year-old race comes up next, the Group 2 Coventry Stakes over the 6f trip.
It is COWARDOFTHECOUNTY (9/2) for me here. I was really taken by his debut victory at the Curragh coming from off the pace to stay on strongly and win going away. The front two pulled way clear of the remainder and it’s a race that continues to work out well. The second has since won at listed level on his next start. He’s a scopey sort that should improve further and I think he brings the best level of form to the table on what we’ve seen so far. He’s obviously open to further improvement too. Stall 11 gives the jockey options too.
3:45 Royal Ascot
Next up at 3:45 is the King Charles III Stakes, a Group 1 contest for the speedsters over 5 furlongs.
It’s TWILIGHT CALLS (10/1) EW for me here. A horse I’ve put up quite often he is certainly up to this level on a going day. He deserves to land a big pot like this and I’m hopeful this could be the day. He’ll get rattling fast ground which is perfect for him as proven when second in this contest back in 2022. His seasonal return was highly encouraging staying on well despite a slow start. He’s entitled to have come on plenty for that and with Ryan Moore on board and the horse getting ideal conditions, he’s the one for me. This is certainly not as deep as previous runnings of the race where he’s gone close.
4:25 Royal Ascot
The 4:25 is another intriguing Group 1, this time the St James Palace Stakes over the round mile for 3 year-olds.
I like NOTABLE SPEECH (11/8) NAP in this. He was mightily impressive when winning the 2000 Guineas against the re-opposing Rosallion on his last start to make it four wins from four. He’s entitled to come on again for that and he’ll relish quick ground. Stall 5 is a lot better than the stall 1 Rosallion has got and he could be away and gone by the time Rosallion gets out. I think Henry Longfellow needs slower ground to be seen to best effect over this trip and he won’t be getting that today.
5:05 Royal Ascot
The 5:05 is our first handicap, the Ascot Stakes over the marathon 2m4f.
It’s BOHER ROAD (10/1) EW I’ve landed on in this competitive contest. From stall 10, I’d be confident he can get a nice handy position which sees him to best effect. He’s coming into this seeking a hat-trick and his all the way victory last time out at Killarney looked impressive given he found plenty for pressure when challenged. The trip should be of no concern and I think he’ll be hitting the frame at least for shrewd connections.
5:40 Royal Ascot
The Wolferton Stakes is next, a listed contest over 1m2f.
It’s BOTANICAL (9/2) NB for me in the Wolferton. I just think he’ll prove to be better than listed level. I loved his win last time out at York as he travelled strongly before showing a useful turn of foot to win easily. He’s another that will really enjoy this quick surface and with William Buick booked, I’d be confident he can go very close here. Stall 13 is fine as coming wide into the straight is often the best place to be as there shouldn’t be a hard luck story all being well. He’s a progressive sort that can land this before bigger targets await over the summer.
6:15 Royal Ascot
We end proceedings with the Copper Horse Handicap over 1m6f.
It’s PARTY CENTRAL (14/1) EW for me here. The strong travelling mare looks a match made in heaven for Jamie Spencer and she’s worth a go at a decent price. A winner of her first two starts on the level. She was last seen finishing third at Down Royal last month not beaten far and I’m sure she’ll come on for that effort. Gordon Elliot will have her raring to go I’m sure and I’ll take my chances on her in a tricky finale.
