2:30 Royal Ascot
The final 2 year-old race of the week is the Chesham Stakes, a listed contest over 7f.
The one I like is GOLDEN MIND (10/1) EW for the Richard Fahey stable. He’s had a winner of a 2 year-old race here the last two years and I think he may well make it a third here. 5f was too sharp for her on debut at Hamilton but he stayed on well to finish third learning from the experience. He then went to Leicester on his second start stepping up to 6f and he stayed on strongly to get up close to home. I think he’ll again improve for that experience and there is no doubt this 7f trip will be another massive positive. He is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Perfect Power who won the Norfolk Stakes at the age of 2, before landing the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup the following year. That’s no negative.
3:05 Royal Ascot
The 3:05 race is the Jersey Stakes, a Group 3 for the 3 year-olds again over the 7f trip.
I’d chance ENFJAAR (7/1) here who is very unexposed pitching into Group 3 action here on just his third career start. However, he’s looked a horse of serious potential in his first two starts. He won a maiden at Newmarket on debut and the Roger Varian stable wouldn’t be known for having many go in at the first time of asking. He then went to Chelmsford and won as easy as you’d like pulling clear to win by 6L. I just think he’s a horse that could be very good and I’m happy to chance him at the price at this level.
3:40 Royal Ascot
The feature on the final day comes up at 3:40 and it is the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, a Group 1 race over 6f.
I like SACRED (9/1) EW here who will relish this test. 6f on fast ground here at Ascot looks ideal as she relishes a fast surface and she’ll be held up off a strong pace and hopefully the stiff finish can play to her strengths. She come from miles back at Lingfield showing a potent turn of foot to win on seasonal return. That was one of her best performances and she looked as good as ever. She was fifth in this race last year beaten a length and that was arguably a weaker renewal. She’ll go close.
4:20 Royal Ascot
The 4:20 race is the 1m4f Group 2 Hardwick Stakes.
It’s FREE WIND (11/4) NAP for me here to round off a great week for Dettori. She’s a horse of serious quality and she knows how to win given she’s won her last four starts. She was a good winner last time out over an inadequate 1m2f trip at York and connections were confident she’d come on for it. The second Rogue Millennium has come out and booster that form with a Group 2 win this week himself. Free Wind will enjoy going back up in trip and I like her a lot in this.
5:00 Royal Ascot
The 5:00 race is one of the most competitive races of the week, the Wokingham Stakes Handicap over 6f.
It has to be SUMMERGHAND (20/1) EW here doesn’t it at the prices. Although he’s 9, he’s still more than capable and he wasn’t beating far last time out staying on strongly behind Bielsa at York. This stiffer test suits a lot better as he likes to come from off a strong pace and he stays this trip well. He’s only 1lb higher than winning the competitive Ayr Gold Cup last year and trainer David O’Meara certainly does well in these big handicap sprints. Adam Kirkby will ride for luck from stall 21 and I’m hopeful he can run into a place at least.
5:35 Royal Ascot
The 5:35 contest is the Golden Gates Handicap, a race for the 3 year-olds over 1m2f.
It’s FIRST SIGHT (13/2) for me here. This well bred sort has improved for each outing and looks to be progressing well for top connections. 5th on debut, he improved for that and has won his last two races, a maiden at Kempton before winning at Lingfield beating a well fancied sort. A mark of 90 could underestimate him.
6:10 Royal Ascot
The finale of the week is the marathon Queen Alexandra Stakes over an extended 2m5f.
It’s RUN FOR OSCAR (4/1) NB in the finale for me. He landed a big gamble for the shrewd Charles Byrnes stable when winning the competitive Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket last season is decisive fashion. That was over 2m2f and the manor of the victory suggests this trip will be fine. He ran over 1m4f last month but that’s far too short for him. That would have been to blow away the cobwebs for this I’m sure and Jim Crowley can land the spoils for us in the final race.
