2:30 Royal Ascot
The opener on Day 3 is the Norfolk Stakes, a Group 2 over 5 furlong for the 2 year-olds.
I’ll chance LOOM (33/1) EW here. He was well fancied on his debut at York suggesting his homework must have been pretty good. However, he only managed to come home in 7th that day. There were excuses though, he was very fresh and went off far too quick faltering late on. The key was he was able to show plenty of pace early on there suggesting 5f is ideal. He put that experience to good use when bolting up at Ripon last time out at the end of last month. He looked a different proposition there sitting just off the pace and showing a decent turn of foot to win going away running right through the line. He can continue on a progressive curve and another run will have done his experience no harm. The Richard Fahey stable have a decent record in this with big priced winners of it in the recent past and I believe they have a lively outsider again here.
3:05 Royal Ascot
Next up at 3:05 is the King George V Stakes, a handicap over 1m4f.
It’s FOURONEOHFEVER (12/1) EW for me in this. He comes here on the back of a hat-trick showing a willing attitude to complete said hat-trick when we last seen him at Chester. He seems to be a horse that just does enough to win and loves a battle. He’s up 6lb for that last victory but he’s improving at a rapid rate and his stable George Boughey are banging in the winners at present which is no bad thing. Stall 13 is no bad thing on this round track and jockey Billy Loughnane already had a winner this week so confidence will be high.
3:40 Royal Ascot
The 3:40 is the Ribblesdale Stakes, a Group 2 race for the fillies over 1m4f.
I’d give DANIELLE (11/1) EW another chance here at the prices. She went off a well fancied favourite for the Lingfield Oaks trial last time out but she could only manage a third on that occasion. It wasn’t a bad run and she still looked inexperienced to me. I’d expect her to improve for it given it was a proper race. Before that effort, she bolted up at Wetherby looking like a seriously promising filly. She is in the right hands to progress further given how good the Gosden stable are at bringing their fillies along. I also think this track will suit her more than Lingfield and she’ll do for me here.
4:25 Royal Ascot
The feature comes up at 4:25, the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup over the 2m4f trip.
I’ll chance SWEET WILLIAM (18/1) EW here who has a consistent record and goes on any ground. He showed his up to this level when chasing home Trueshan at Doncaster last season. He was open to further progress this season and he’s been brought along steadily this year. He was third on his reappearance before reversing the form with Coltrane and Caius Chorister at Sandown last month. He did well to pick them up that day running a little keen early on and giving the front two first run. Again, I’d expect further improvement again from that effort and he’s one of the more unexposed sorts in here. I’d be happy to give him a go at big prices.
5:05 Royal Ascot
The 5:05 race is the competitive Britannia Stakes, a handicap over the straight mile.
It is QIRAT (10/1) NB for me. He was a decent 2 year-old last season but after being gelded over the winter, he showed us he had trained on at 3 when bolting up at Goodwood over 7f at the end of May. I think he’ll improve further for this step up a mile here too. The stable has history in the race having won it in 2019 for the same owners and stall 29 looks to be the right side of the draw to me. I find it hard to see him out the frame at the very least.
5:40 Royal Ascot
It’s Group 3 action next with the Hampton Court Stakes over the 1m2f trip.
It is KING’S GAMBIT (5/2) NAP I like here. A progressive 2 year-old last season, he was a well-backed winner of the London Gold Cup handicap at Newbury on his return this season. That was a competitive contest and he won easily. He looks ready for Group level company and I think he can follow up here.
6:15 Royal Ascot
The final race is the Buckingham Palace Stakes, a wide-open handicap over 7 furlongs.
I’d take a chance on FRESH (16/1) EW. He’s seven years of age now and he has to prove he’s still capable but this track and trip is perfect for him and if he’s going to bounce back, today might just be that day. He shown enough when not beaten far at Haydock last time out to suggest he’s still got a race like this in him. He’s very well handicapped on the best of his form and from stall 30 with Hayley Turner on board, I want him on side in this competitive handicap.
