Royal Ascot Day 4 Tips – Preview and Betting Tip for Each Race on Friday 17th June
Royal Ascot enters it’s fourth day and the sweltering temperatures will be a test for horses, jockeys and racegoers. Henry has gone through the card and picked his best bet for each of the seven races, which are all live on ITV Racing.

2:30 Ascot
The opener on Day 4 is the Albany Stakes, a Group 3 for the 2 year-old fillies over 6f.
I like MAWJ (11/4) NAP here for Goldophin and Saaed Bin Suroor. She was mightily impressive on debut at Newmarket where she shown a lot of pace and quickened away nicely to win going away in taken fashion. The stable are in the best form they’ve been for a long time which includes a winner here earlier in the week. She looked a proper 2 year-old that day and Newmarket maidens often work out the best form guide. She can improve from that first outing and take this.
3:05 Ascot
The first of two Group 1 races is the 6f Commonwealth Cup, a great addition to the meeting in recent years.
I’ll chance GO BEARS GO (9/1) here. The Loughnane stable and Rossa Ryan have had a nearly week and hopefully they can get some sweet justice here. A winner here at Ascot on his seasonal return which brings some nice course form to the table. He then was 4th behind El Caballo at Haydock last time out but that only tells half the story. Normally fast away, he dipped at the start and was ultimately very slowly away. He stayed on well to finish fourth there I thought. Hopefully he gets away better today as that has never been a problem before. He’s gutsy and he will appreciate the quick ground and the stiff finish Ascot has to offer here.
3:40 Ascot
Next up we have the 3:40 and it is the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes, a tricky handicap over the 1m4f trip.
I like CANDLEFORD (7/1) EW here for the Haggas stable. Last time out, he was an impressive winner at Kempton beaten Coltrane comfortably who won earlier this week here at Ascot. He’s been kept fresh for this since that effort and my guess is that was to protect what could be a lenient mark. Drawn in 18 isn’t an issue as high numbers often dominate over this trip here at Ascot. He’ll track the leaders and hopefully pick up well in the straight. The trip and ground should hold no fears.
4:20 Ascot
The second Group 1 comes up at 4:20 and it is a decent renewal of the Coronation Stakes over the mile. Homeless Song is a notably absentee but the race is still full of promising fillies.
I’ll chance 1000 Guineas heroine CACHET (13/2) here. She is again underrated in the market and there’s plenty of value around her current price. She looks set to get her own way in front again today and I see no reason why she won’t be involved in the finish. She ran a good second to back that Guineas win up staying on well to just miss out by a head over in the French 1000 Guineas. I just think she’s going to adopt similar tactics to her 1000 Guineas win today and they may leave her alone in front. That would be a mistake. The track has suited front runners well all week.
5:00 Ascot
The 5:00 contest is the forever competitive Sandringham Stakes handicap ran over the straight mile for the 3 year-old fillies.
I’ve landed on PERSIST (12/1) EW here for the Cheveley Park Stud owners. Improved with every run so far, she did well to win last time out at Ripon as nothing really went right. Everything click in the final furlong and she powered right through the line to win going away. She’ll stay this trip well which is important and she’ll have learned a lot from that win last time out. She’s definitely better than her current mark in my book and she is a good each-way bet today from the ideal draw in stall 11.
5:35 Ascot
The 5:35 is the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes over 1m4f.
I’ll chance LYSANDER (7/2) NB here for that man again, William Haggas. I think Changingoftheguard is vulnerable on this ground and I’ve seen the Charlie Appleby horses run better than most have this week. They’ve had two winners but a lot have disappointed. Lysander will definitely appreciate this further step up in trip to 1m4f after finishing a good third behind the well-regarded Lionel last time out I think he can kick on starting now. He won well at Newcastle prior to that effort and I think he can resume winning ways in this contest.
6:10 Ascot
A very tricky 5f handicap ends proceedings here on Day 4 with the market leader currently priced up at 7/1 as 28 runners look set to go to post.
It’s LADIES CHURCH (8/1) for me in the finale. I think she’s been laid out for this for a Johnny Murtagh team who are pretty lethal when it comes to lining one up for a handicap. She was a good second on her seasonal return going down by a neck over at Cork. That will have put her spot on for this and stall 14 looks ideal as the American filly is drawn in 17 and looks sure to set a strong pace. The selections will be able to track her and hopefully go close in a competitive finale.
