Saturday’s ITV Racing Tips – Ascot, Newmarket & Recar (02/10/21)
There are eight live races on ITV Racing this Saturday before the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday, and Henry has picked out his best betting tip for each race.
The Sun Chariot Stakes is the feature of the day, due off at 2.55pm at Newmarket, where Snow Lantern looks to go off favourite for the Group 1 feature.

1:45 Newmarket
The 1:45 race from Newmarket gets us underway and it is a fillies handicap over the 1m2f trip.
My selection here is ENSEMBLE (6/1). She’s only had four runs to date and she’s shown improvement for each run. She improved remarkably from her debut effort to finish a close second at Newmarket on her next start. She then went on to win at Lingfield before another solid display last time out finishing a good second back at Lingfield. I don’t think she’s stopped improving yet and this step up in trip is likely to bring out more improvement.
2:05 Ascot
It’s Listed action next up over at Ascot over 5f with plenty of familiar sprinters from throughout the season lining up.
The one I like here is SIGNIFICANTLY NB (7/1). A horse that will handle these testing conditions well as proven when winning a competitive race at Royal Ascot back in June. Yet to have her preferred cut in the ground since that effort, I think she can go close under optimal conditions given the fact a lot of her market rivals would prefer a sounder surface.
2:20 Newmarket
The October Auction Stakes is next up, a 6f race for 2 year-olds.
The one I’ve landed on in this is ERNIES VALENTINE (12/1). He won a maiden back in June on his debut in a race that is working out extremely well with the likes of Wings Of War finishing second and Mr McCann back in third. He stalled a little on his next two starts but he’s bounced back well winning his last two starts and things appear to be heading back in the right direction. I think drawn high is the place to be here and he has a lovely draw in stall 25. William Buick is an encouraging jockey booking too.
2:40 Ascot
The Cumberland Lodge Stakes comes up at 2:40 and this is a Group 3 contest over 1m4f.
The selection in this race is HUKUM (9/4). He is having a great consistent season and if he runs to form, the others will have to run a career best to get close to him in my opinion. A course and distance winner here at Ascot that can handle some cut in the ground, a worthy favourite.
2:55 Newmarket
It’s Group 1 action next at Newmarket as we have the feature race of the day, the Sun Chariot Stakes ran over the mile trip restricted to fillies.
The one I like here is SAFFRON BEACH NAP (7/1). She has really strong form here at Newmarket and deserves to make a Group 1 breakthrough in my opinion. She bounced back to her best when winning a Group 3 at Sandown last time out and she is a previous winner on soft ground. She came to the boil at this point of the year last season and trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam believes that’s the case again this season. Has to go close.
3:15 Ascot
Back to Ascot we go for more Group 3 action. It is the Bengough Stakes ran over over the 6f trip.
My selection in this is GLEN SHIEL (10/3). A former Group 1 winner who drops to Group 3 class here for the first time in a while. He’s been running well enough on ground quicker than ideal against high calibre opposition. He now drops in class and gets his perfect conditions so I expect a bold bid.
3:35 Redcar
The 3:35 from Redcar is the Two Year Old Trophy, a competitive listed race ran over 5f for 2 year-olds.
The one for me here is CHIPOTLE (6/1). A winner already of two decent pots this season in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot and the Brocklesby too. He’s been running in better races than this and appears the class angle in a poor renewal of the race. I think the drop to 5f will suit too.
3:50 Ascot
The finale on ITV is the 3:50 at Ascot which is the Challenge Cup, a very competitive handicap over 7f.
The one I like is RIVER NYMPH (11/2). He won a similar contest in the Victoria Cup three starts back here at Ascot. That was obviously over this same and course and distance and he has ran respectable on his two starts since finishing fourth both times. He’s only 4lb higher than when winning the Victoria Cup and he’ll get similar ground here. Hard to see him finishing out the frame.
