1:50 Sandown
The opener from Sandown is a very competitive handicap hurdle ran over just shy of 2m4f. There is a lot of unexposed runners and last time out winners in the line-up and I’m sure it’s a race that will work out well.
The one for me here is SAM BARTON. I was really impressed with his victory last time out at Doncaster where he travelled well before staying on strongly to beat a useful yardstick in The Edgar Wallace. I don’t think he’s finished improving yet and the deep Sandown ground should hold no fears.
2:05 Wolves
The 2:05 from Wolves is a listed contest for flat fans ran over 7f.
I like HIGHLAND DRESS here and I think there is still value in his price despite him being favourite. He comfortably has the best consistent form in the book and trainer Archie Watson can’t do anything wrong recently. He’s 3-7 on the AW and I don’t think this tapeta service will hold any fears.
2:25 Sandown
The 2:25 race is the feature race on the card, the Imperial Cup which is a 2m handicap hurdle. Natural History heads the market after a decisive win last time out at Plumpton.
The one for me here is LANGER DAN NB. He really caught the eye at Market Rasen last time out where he was held up way off the pace before finishing strongly to run on into 4th. That was his first effort since a wind operation and now the horse knows he can breath easier, I expect a bold show from the Skelton charge. There is scope in his current handicap mark.
2:40 Wolves
The 2:40 from Wolves is another competitive race for punters to get stuck into pre-Cheltenham. It is a Lincoln trial ran just over the 1m distance.
The one I’d take a chance on here is MAN OF THE NIGHT NAP. The Hannon team are slowly coming to the boil as the flat season beckons and this horse is relatively unexposed and can improve again this season. His last run was a huge effort where he finished 2nd at 40/1 in a decent handicap race at Newmarket. He travelled well that day and just couldn’t quite reel the winner in. With another winter on his back to strengthen up, he could be a real player here.
3:00 Sandown
The 3:00 race from Sandown is a mares bumper and market movers in the day will be worth noting.
The one at the moment for me is TWEED SKIRT. She won well on debut at Wetherby despite showing signs of greenness and trainer Nicky Henderson is a genius with mares. Henderson is slowly returning to the strike rate we expect of him and he can have a nice winner here heading into Cheltenham.
3:15 Wolves
The 3:15 race from Wolves is a handicap over 6f.
The one I’ve landed on here is SUMMERGHAND. He was a great record of the competitive Stewards Cup last year and he is only 1lb higher now which suggests to me he’s more than capable of winning a race like this. He ran a good race last time out finishing third and I believe that will have him spot on now for this.
3:35 Sandown
The finale on ITV comes at Sandown and it is Novice Handicap Chase ran over 2m4f. It is a trappy little race with the market leader No Getaway heading it at 4/1.
The one for me is BELARGUS. Nick Glifford is in rude form at the moment and he can have another nice winner here. This horse won really well last time out over 2m staying on strongly suggesting this 2m4f will be well within his reach. The second that day who was 9l behind won a nice race at Sandown on Friday which brings substance to the form.
