Saturday’s ITV Racing Tips for Leopardstown, Sandown and Musselburgh

Racing jargon

There are no less than nine scheduled races for ITV Racing coverage on Saturday this weekend after both Musselburgh and Sandown passed morning inspections. Wetherby is cancelled though.

The feature of the weekend’s racing is the Dublin Racing Festival over in Ireland and you can see our special Dublin Racing Festival Tips article which includes a preview of every one of the races on Saturday’s card.

There are also plenty of free bets and offers to use for this weekend including a special bet £5 get £20 sign-up bonus from Paddy Power for betting on Leopardstown.

1:35 Leopardstown

The first race from Leopardstown is the Grade 1 Dublin Chase over 2m. Red hot Queen Mother Champion Chase favourite Chacun Pour Soi heads the market with stablemate Min in behind. Notebook is next in the betting but he’ll have to improve a lot from his recent effort to trouble the Mullins pair.

I can’t see past CHACUN POUR SOI here. I think he is the real deal and he put his best career performance to date up last time out when powering clear here at Leopardstown. He won this race last year when Min back in second and I think we are in for the same outcome this year. The front two in the market are clearly the best two horses in the race and I’d advise keeping it simple with a forecast bet.

Forecast: 1st CHACUN POUR SOI. 2nd MIN.

2:10 Leopardstown

The 2:10 race from Leopardstown is another 2m chase, this time for the novices as it’s the 2021 renewal of the Irish Arkle.

Willie Mullins holds a strong hand again and I expect him to be in the winners enclosure here. I think ENERGUMENE is a top novice chaser and he’ll win this before serving it up to Shishkin in March. He has a serious engine and he jumps like a proper 2m chaser, slick and efficient. He beat Captain Guinness comfortably last time out and I can’t see how Captain Guineas reverses that form today. Franco Du Port needs further in my opinion and will be done for tactical speed. The bigger danger will be the Mullins stablemate Unexcepted who jumps like a natural when winning a beginners chase at Tipperary earlier in the season.

3:15 Leopardstown

The 3:15 race is the exciting renewal of the Irish Champion Hurdle over 2m. The exciting mate Honeysuckle heads the market as she bids to remain unbeaten and back up her win in this contest last year. However, her ideal trip is 2m4f and I think she’s vulnerable today. She did win this race last year but it was a weaker renewal and she was all out to hold on.

My idea of the winner is SALDIER. Saldier has always been highly regarded in the Mullins yard but he’s always been very fragile. He won the Grade 1 Morgiana Hurdle two starts back which shows he has the class to compete at this level. I think he needed the run last time out where he travelled well but blew up in the straight. This is the first time for a long time Mullins has been able to get two consecutive runs into him over a short period of time and I think it could prove quite telling at an appealing price.

2:05 Musselburgh

The 2:05 from Musselburgh is the Scottish County Hurdle, a handicap ran over 2m. We have a wide open renewal and the Paul Nicholls trained Christopher Wood heads the market.

The one I’ve landed on is TORIGNI (NAP). This horse is the least exposed horse in the line-up and has potential to improve through the ranks. He came over from France so the soft ground won’t be a problem in my book and he’s finished third on his two British starts in races that I think will work out well. He races off a lovely racing weight of 10’3 and I think he’ll go close.

3:45 Musselburgh

The 3:45 race is going to be an absolute slog as it is a 4m1f race known as the Edinburgh National. It’s a wide open renewal and if your horse finishes, they may will be in the placings.

The one for me is THE FERRY MASTER. Sandy Thomson is very good with his staying chasers so I’m not worried about the large step up in trip for this horse. The addition of cheekpieces appeared to have been the making of him as they went on two starts ago and he’s won both starts wearing them. Sandy Thomson is in good form at the moment and will be eager to land another big staying Handicap Chase winner of a Saturday. I think his horse has a serious chance today.
