Saturday’s ITV Racing Tips: Race by Race Preview for Newbury, Newmarket and Ripon
This Saturday’s ITV Racing comes from Newbury, Newmarket and Ripon and they include the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury and the Great St Wilfrid Handicap from Ripon.
Henry has gone through the eight races and picked a betting tip from each race and you can have a read of the previews below.
1:45 Newbury
The Denford Stakes is first up on ITV, a listed race for the 2 year-olds over the 7f trip.
The one for me is BAYSIDE BOY NAP (7/4). He was really impressive when winning on debut over this course and distance showing a useful turn of foot to win going away. Roger Varian won this last year and often targets his best 2 year-old at this before stepping them up into group company. That appears to be the case again here as he holds plenty of Group race entries and the Varian team are in hot form at the moment.
2:00 Newmarket
The 2:00 race is a fillies handicap over the 1m6f trip.
My selection in this is EILEENDOVER (6/1). Her flat campaign was eagerly anticipated after impressing in bumpers last season. Things haven’t quite gone to plan in her first three flat efforts but there is reason for optimism here as she now steps up in trip which is bound to suit her. She makes her handicap debut here off 92 and she certainly has the talent to win off this mark. Hopefully today is the day.
2:20 Newbury
The 2:20 race from Newbury is the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes over the 1m6f trip.
I expect HUKUM (Evens) will be tough to beat here. He won this race last year and the competition doesn’t appear to be any stronger this time round. He has bounced back to form in his last two runs including a victory last time out at York. A repeat of that performance would surely be enough to take this.
2:35 Newmarket
Next up at Newmarket is a tricky 6f handicap. A great race for casual viewers as you have to be a grey horse to feature here.
The one for me is DEVILS ANGEL (6/1). Certainly one of the more unexposed horses in the line-up, she can hopefully improve enough to win this contest. She won well last time out over this course and distance which is an obviously positive and she won’t have any ground concerns.
2:55 Newbury
The 2:55 race from Newbury is a 7f handicap and there is a few unexposed horses in this that look particular interesting not only today but for the rest of the season.
The one for me is SUNSET BAY (7/2). She is a progressive sort that has won her last two starts. The first of those came over for us de and distance before she bolted up by 4l at Sandown. She’s up 9lb but I’m confidence she can go very close and continue her progression.
3:10 Ripon
The 3:10 from Ripon is the Silver Trophy Handicap. A 6f handicap which features horses that didn’t make the cut for the St Wilfrid that comes up at 3:40.
I like I AM A DREAMER EW (16/1) in this. He has a very good record here at Ripon and there is no reason why he can’t add to that fine record again today. He came 2nd here in his last start at Ripon back in June where he finished second to Commanche Falls who has since won the Stewards Cup. A couple of lacklustre efforts since are no concern as he’s always been a little hit and miss. PJ McDonald takes the rides and he’s won him before which is an added positive. In a wide open race he’ll do for me each way.
3:30 Newbury
The 3:30 at Newbury is next and this is the feature race of the day. The Group 2 Hungerford Stakes over the 7f trip.
My selection is DANYAH NB (5/1). A horse who’s progressing really well and has ran well in a lot of the seasons big handicap races. He won last time out at Ascot and I think he’s capable of transferring that form to Group company now. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet and hopefully it’s part 2 of an Owen Burrows double.
3:45 Ripon
The final race on ITV is the Great St Wilfrid Stakes over 6f. A wide open handicap race where a case can be made for many.
The one I’ve landed on is STAXTON EW (7/1). A horse that saves his best form for here at Ripon. He has won three times here and that includes a victory in this race last season. One of the other wins here at Ripon was back here in April and he has shown me enough form this season to suggest he can again go close in this. This is bound to have been his number one target again and he’ll surely hit the frame at least.
