Staking a Claim Week 7 Selections – Cheltenham Ante-post Tips 2023

Staking a Claim week 7 tips

OB has gone rogue on us this week and picked out a Cheltenham Festival ante-post double at odds of 19/1 and it’s a delve into the Brown Advisory Chase for Ciaran’s prediction at the current odds of 20/1.

You can see all the existing selections in the table at the end of this article and there are also links to the write-ups for each week.

All the selections will be recorded as a 1pt win or 0.5pts each-way and we haven’t restricted the tips to any particular bet so you can expect to see singles, doubles and even the odd treble for the tips.

You can also follow both Ciaran (@murphfinbarrs) and OB (@OB_14) on Twitter where they will be outlining all of their ante-post bets and thoughts ahead of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival.

Ciaran’s Week 7 Bet

  • James Du Berlais (Brown Advisory Chase)
  • Current Odds – 20/1 with bet365

Another Week, another selection coming your way from Closutton, this time in the novice chasing division. With the emergence of another potential superstar in 3 YO mare Lossiemouth, I am going for another expensive french recruit, but one who in my eyes has yet to achieve his potential.

The story goes that Willie Mullins spied a horse in training with Robert Collet but couldn’t buy him despite his best efforts. Then out of the blue, he gets a call to say that Muniir and Suede have bought him and would Willie like to train him. That horse was JAMES DU BERLAIS and in my eyes, he could be the Brown Advisory Chase winner this year.

Now it takes a bit of imagination and a leap of faith to make that claim about a horse who missed all last season and who has yet to jump a fence in public. However, French hurdles are fences in all but name so that shouldn’t be an issue. He has been entered in 2 races at Christmas (both Grade 1s). In fact, Willie has never run this horse out of Grade 1 company (his first start straight into a Champion Hurdle). It says a lot for the regard he is held in at the stable. In his second start, when stepped up to 3m at Punchestown, he found only an on song Klassical dream too good. He also has form on both Good and Soft ground which is a bonus when Antepost punting.

He is by Muhtahir (same sire as Envoi Allen), while his dam is a half brother to Cue Card so there is class in thr family. Given Willie’s riches at 2 and 2 ½ Miles, I am confident that the Brown Advisory will be the target.

That the market is currently 12/1 the field shows how open this race is and with a lot of the favourites not certain to turn up, I think 20/1 is a cracking each way price.

Back James Du Berlais 20/1 EW for the Brown Advisory Chase.

OB’s Week 7 Bet

Week 7 has seen me struggle to put up a confident selection to be bullish about or offer significant value so im putting up a double on 2 horses at the front of their respective markets. They are short enough favourites but they have been impressive on the track and in my opinion, justify that favouritism. I also think its very likely that they will be aimed at these races so im happy to double up here.

LOSSIEMOUTH (3/1 Triumph Hurdle) and LUCCIA (4/1 Mares Novice Hurdle) make a 19/1 double. I was contemplating putting Lossiemouth up previously but I wanted to see her on the track before and see if the hype was justified. At Fairyhouse on Sunday I believe the hype was justified as she ran out an impressive winner in the Bar One Juvenile hurdle beating stablemate Zarak The Brave (who went off 5/4f) by 4 lengths in the process.

The fact that stable jockey Paul Townend chose to ride the runner-up over the mare along with a drift in the market for the winner tells me that they probably weren’t expecting that performance from Lossiemouth at Closutton. I think that performance can me marked up and I expect the winner to improve further. I don’t think Paul Townend will be giving up the ride on her again.

She is now clear fav in the triumph market and rightly so. I’m sure more horses will come out from now until March to add competition but she sets a clear standard and it will take a good 1 to beat her at Cheltenham.

Luccia sits at the top of the market for the Mares novice hurdle after an impressive win on hurdles debut at Newbury. Already favourite for the race before her seasonal reappearance due to a 17 length win in the EBF Mares bumper at Sandown in March, the Nicky Henderson trained mare strengthened that position after taking to hurdles with ease.

Like the triumph, I am expecting more horses to come out and throw their hat into the ring for this race throughout the winter but like Lossiemouth, Luccia has set a high standard for this division and it will need a good one to get the better of her come March.

Stake – 1pt win only Lossiemouth  (Triumph Hurdle) and Luccia (Mares novice hurdle) 19/1 BET365.
