Kempton: 2:05 Unibet Extra Place Offers Every Day Novices’ Hurdle 2m
Unseasonably fast ground has decimated the field for this Listed contest, as it has the whole of the Kempton card, but may have presented Cobbler’s Dream with an opportunity to follow up his comfortable win at Warwick last month. Exactly what that form amounts to is anybody’s guess, but the stoutly-bred 5-year-old could do no more than win with plenty in hand on his debut for Ben Case. He should improve for that run, his first since April, and has underfoot conditions in his favour once again.
Selection: Cobbler’s Dream (15/8 with William Hill)
Kempton: 3:50 Natasha Savage, Thank You & Good Luck Handicap Chase 3m
West Sussex trainer Gary Moore has a dismal 2-32 (6%) strike rate with his steeplechasers at Kempton in the last five seasons, which hardly inspires confidence. However, Mister Tickle completed a hat-trick with a minimum of fuss at Fontwell earlier this month and, although 5lb higher in the weights this time, may not have finished winning yet. Dropping back in distance is a slight concern, but going right-handed should do him no harm.
Selection: Mister Tickle (11/4 with William Hill)
Sedgefield: 3:30 Vickers Independent Family Run Bookmaker Durham National Handicap Chase 3m5f
The consistent Montanna has yet to win over this far, but showed no signs of stopping when winning over 3 miles 3 furlongs here two starts ago and should find an extra quarter of a mile well within his compass. Of course, he is 5lb higher in the weights in a better race, but remains unexposed as an out-and-out stayer; today’s marathon distance could be the making of him. Pembrokeshire trainer Peter Bowen has a 5-15 (33%) strike rate with steeplechasers at Sedgefield in recent years, which adds to his appeal.
Selection: Montanna (9/2 with William Hill)
Sedgefield: 4:40 Cavellos Italian Steakhouse Gin & Cocktail Bar Handicap Hurdle 2m4f
It is, frankly, difficult to make an entirely convincing case for any of these, but Donald McCain has his string in rude health – he boasts a 45% strike rate in the last 14 days – so perhaps his course and distance winner Beach Break is the answer. Indeed, the Cacique gelding comfortably won a better race than this, on good going, off a 2lb lower mark, at this time last year. Two terrible blunders effectively put paid to his chance at Kelso last time but, back on a course where he has yet to run a bad race, he looks worthy of support.
Selection: Beach Break (13/2 with William Hill)
