Sunday’s ITV Racing Tips on 1000 Guineas Day from Newmarket, Salisbury and Hamilton
1:50 Newmarket
The opener on ITV today is a 1m4f handicap but we only have 6 runners going to post which is slightly underwhelming.
All six have a reasonable chance but the one I like here is ZABEEL CHAMPION. He is a typical Mark Johnston horse in the fact he likes to go from the front and loves a fight. He has won his last two starts and I don’t think he’s finished improving yet. He’s the likely pace angle again here and only up 3lb from his last victory I think he’ll prove a tough nut to crack in the opener.
2:05 Salisbury
We head to Salisbury next for another handicap contest, this time over 1m6f and we have another small field with seven runners lining up here.
The one I like is PRINCE ALEX. Unbeaten in all five career starts he looks pretty useful. He won well over this trip last time out at York where he showed a willing attitude to hang on when challenged. I like that attitude in a stayer and the Ralph Beckett team are in rude form which is another positive.
2:25 Newmarket
The 2:25 race is the Pretty Polly Stakes, a 1m2f listed contest for the fillies which often provides us with some clues for the Oaks.
I like SEA KARATS here and I think she could prove to be a Group 1 filly in due time. She was really unlucky on her debut at Newbury where she had no luck in running but still managed to fly home to finish third doing all her best work at the end of the race. She is held in high regard by the Haggas team and she can get off the mark here.
2:40 Hamilton
The 2:40 from Hamilton is a 1m5f handicap and I’m sure Hamilton will be honoured to feature on ITV’s coverage on 1000 Guineas Day.
I am hoping BEN LILLY can win this and complete the hat-trick. He has a very impressive win strike rate winning seven of his last 10 starts and I think he’s capable off adding another win here judging on his effort last time out. He won a shade cosily at Doncaster last time out and I think he can defy another rise in the handicap here.
3:00 Newmarket
The 3:00 from Newmarket is a Group 2 for the fillies known as the Dahlia Stakes. It is a 1m1f contest for the fillies and mares.
The one I like here is FOORAAT NB. She was second behind Lavenders Blue on her seasonal reappearance at Kempton and I think she’ll come on a bundle for that and reverse the form here. She is certainly open to plenty of improvement this term as she’s only had 6 career starts to date and I think this track and trip will suit her very well.
3:15 Hamilton
The second race from Hamilton on ITV comes up at 3:15 and it is a 5f sprint.
The one for me is MUKER. He is all speed and was a very good 2 year-old last season. He was third in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot to back that up. He went off favourite on his seasonal reappearance but appeared to run very fresh and was a well beaten 4th. I’m hopeful that will have brought him on and I expect better from him here on his second run of the season.
3:40 Newmarket
The finale is the 1000 Guineas and red-hot favourite Santa Barbara has been smashed up during the antepost markets. She is 6/4 favourite off the back of a maiden win and I’m happy to take her on here given the unknowns.
I really like THUNDER BEAUTY NAP here at a big price. She won her debut last season at the Curragh over 6f staying on well through the line. She then went for the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on her next start where she was a very unlucky 5th. She was doing all her best work at the end of that 7f contest and that is arguably the strongest form in this race. I am happy to forgive her last start in France as that was on heavy ground and she was hampered at a crucial stage. I think she’ll improve from 2 to 3, she has her ground and the step out to 1m looks sure to bring out more improvement. I can’t get my head around the big prices available for her. Bet of the weekend for me.
