Which Grand National Horses Running this Year Have the Best Name?
The Grand National is deemed somewhat of a lottery and with various big-priced winners over the years (100/1, 66/1, 33/1) it seems a good idea to have a stab at a few horses at wild prices with a name you might like.
It’s a race where picking a horse purely on their name can bring you a winner just as much as backing a favourite or a horse with good form in the book. Take That fans know that better than most when Rule The World won the 2016 edition at 33/1 having never won over fences previously. Even though the biggest winner of the 4 runnings between 2017-2021 was 14/1 (Tiger Roll won as short as 4/1), some normality returned last year when Noble Yeats won at 50/1.
This article runs through a number of horses that are likely to get backed solely on their name and I expect a few of them to be very popular with the once-a-year punter on the day. Every horse will have some connection to someone somewhere so I’d advise you all to back the horse that connects you in some form or another.
Good Grand National Horse Names 2023
Some will choose their horses in a matter of seconds whereas there will be many that take their time and carefully select their choice. That brings us to Carefully Selected (33/1) who won an ultra-competitive Thyestes Chase on heavy ground over 3m1f in January and is one likely to go well over this marathon trip.
Sticking with the Irish genius trainer Willie Mullins takes us to stablemate Mr Incredible (14/1). I’m sure there are lots of males out there who are incredible (or just think it) and I can see this horse having lots of fans on the day. Having been 2nd and 3rd in highly competitive races this season so far, he is one that will relish the big field and the 30 fences. He can be quirky at times but maybe that’s the appeal too.
The all-rounder in the field is definitely Velvet Elvis (40/1). Maybe you like the song, the plant or fancy the Whiskey cocktail? Or your love for paintings of the great Elvis Presley means that this is your Grand National selection? Either way, he has a chance following his 6th in last year’s Irish National.
Boys & Girls Names in the 2023 Grand National
I’m sure some of the female attention will be pointing to Eva’s Oscar and Gabby’s Cross who are both 66/1 shots whereas Darrens Hope and Cloudy Glen are the ones for the boys and are both very appealing at 100/1. Joining the 100/1 pair is Sam Brown (for the males and females). Sam Brown won on this card last year so has Aintree experience on his side.
Dog Names in the 2023 Grand National
Owners of a Great Dane or a Mastiff? Or maybe you are just some big time Charlie? Then look no further than The Big Dog (25/1). He was 3rd in this season’s Welsh National and is sure to have a chance here and is a good EW price.
Booze Related National Horses Names
Aintree is full of glam and plenty of booze. Whether you’ve been on course on Friday or just had a late night elsewhere, by the time Saturday of the Grand National comes around, it’s time to get Back on the Lash (66/1) with some Gin on Lime (80/1). Plenty of cash will be invested all weekend and I can see a fair share of that money coming for these 2 horses. Both have won at Cheltenham before and now they will be trying to win the biggest prize of all for their backers. It will be some weekend if one of those 2 were to win the 2023 Randox Health Grand National.
Best of luck with your punts!
