Burnley vs Southampton Betting Preview

The appointment of Ralph Hassenhuttl steadied a faltering Southampton last season. The Saints won just one of their 15 league games under Mark Hughes and looked to be in serious danger. Hassnhuttl’s arrival brought a marked improvement in goalscoring, rising from 0.87 goals per game to 1.4. Now with a full pre-season under his belt, the Austrian’s side looks to be on the up.

Burnley were brought back down to reality last campaign. After a fairy-tale seventh-place finish with a European spot, 2018/19 was far less exciting. Like Southampton, Burnley started poorly and remained in the relegation zone until the new year. Midweek trips to Turkey and Greece in August will not have helped a squad stretched by the demands of Europa League qualification.

A run of eight undefeated, in which Ashley Barnes bagged five and Chris Wood netted four, helped stave off the threat of relegation. With 2017/18 hero, Nick Pope now fully fit and the signing of fan favourite, (and former Saint) Jay Rodriguez, Burnley look set to kick off this season in better form.

 

Betting Tips

These two sides opened last campaign with a 0-0 draw. Burnley are no longer hampered with Europa League qualification and Southampton have acquired an ambitious forward-thinking manager. Once again there will be little to separate these two sides.

The last three meetings between these sides have been draws and you would have to go as far back as 2016 for the last time either side scored more than once. Their last encounter saw 25 shots between them, resulting in just two goals, one of which was a penalty. As such, we’re backing under 2.5 goals at 4/6.
