Istanbul Baskasehir were unlucky last season to miss out on the Super Lig title, however their highly impressive campaign has earned them the chance to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Abdullah Avci is gone, and he’s been replaced by Turkish Cup winner Okan Buruk. The new boss inherits a very talented squad, although they’ve added a number of players this summer. Miguel Viera and Ponck arrive to provide some defensive reinforcements whilst Furkan Soyalp should add some much needed creativity in the final third. Last season, Basaksehir weren’t the neutrals favourite. They netted just 49 times in 34 games, and scored three or more goals at home on just three occasions. They relied on their obstinate defence which shipped just 22 goals during the course of the Turkish Super Lig season. Buruk will be looking to keep that firm base, and build upon it. This is his first competitive game in charge, and he’ll be looking to make things difficult for the travelling Greeks. At home in this competition, they have previously beaten Club Brugge, and were defeated by an 84th minute goal against Spanish giants Sevilla.

Olympiakos have played twice in this competition, easing past Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen. They kept a rare clean sheet on the road, and punished their hosts back in Piraeus. They don’t traditionally travel well in this competition, with Partizan and Reijka the only victims since October 2015. Having said that, they’ve looked sharp in pre-season, and they should give their opponents a difficult time. It’s always hard to trust Greek sides on the road in the Champions League, and the Turkish top flight is generally considered to be much stronger than the Greek Super League. Ruben Semedo has joined this summer to help shore up their back-line whilst Mathieu Valbuena will know all about this opposition having arrived from Fenerbahce. There are a lot of new names to integrate themselves into the squad, although they didn’t look disjointed at all in their fixture against Plzen.

 

Istanbul Basaksehir vs Olympiakos Betting Tips

Although they won just one of their last five fixtures in the top flight, Istanbul Basaksehir are not easy to play against. They could also benefit from a fresh start in this one, and although things may take time to click under the new manager, I do think they will have enough to edge this one. At home, they’re suitably strong, and they will look to control this game. Olympiakos do tend to beat weaker sides on the road, but they don’t have a great overall record in the Champions League on their travels. At 13/8, a standout price with Bet Victor, the hosts should be backed to take a lead into the second leg.

If Basaksehir do manage to land the spoils in this one, it isn’t going to be a formality. Olympiakos will fight throughout, and make it difficult for Istanbul to find a way through. They weren’t know for their free-scoring ways last year, and they will need to find some creativity in order to break the deadlock.
