It’s a very straightforward scenario for City here – avoid defeat and they’re guaranteed to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, with Spurs and Manchester United both already through. A draw would be enough on the night but after the ding-dong affair played out in Germany three weeks ago you’d expect City, and particularly Guardiola, would be keen to make a statement. Sure, victory is far from essential but I can’t believe for a second the Pep’s men won’t approach the game in the same manner they normally do.

You can get odds-against on the hosts winning both halves here, which looks madness to me. Schalke are low on confidence and although they ran the Citizens close in February, are without a win in their last five matches.

Predictably, it was Sergio Aguero who got City on their way at the Veltins Arena – as is so often the case in big games. The club’s all-time record goalscorer has shown no signs of slowing down in recent weeks and was brought off early at the weekend with Tuesday night’s game clearly in mind. Aguero is prominently positioned in the Premier League scoring charts once more but would doubtless swap personal accolades for the opportunity to reach the latter stages of the Champions League, were it offered to him.

The Argentinian is a cert to start up front against Schalke and will look to capitalise on their shaky defensive line when the match gets underway. He’s 11/4 to score a brace and that’s the second of our Man City vs Schalke predictions.

Correct Score Betting Tip

Many felt City were hard done by against Schalke with regards to the two penalties awarded against them and without them, the visitors would clearly have had a far more comfortable evening than they ultimately did. The scoreline may suggest otherwise but in actuality, City weren’t troubled as much as you might have expected given that they also played a significant proportion of the match with 10 men.

All things being equal this time round and I’m very much anticipating the Germans to be blown away, which would be by no means a disgrace. There’s no doubt the English champions have a plethora of resources to call upon when things get tricky and there are only a handful of clubs who can really compete with them when it comes to the depth of talent available. I can see a routine 3-0 victory here for City which would see them sail into the next round without really breaking sweat. That’s a 7/1 poke and dependent on the hosts keeping a clean sheet, which they failed to do at the weekend.
